Chief Minister Stanhope has announced he’s getting more street trees planted around the place.

“During November, the ACT Government will replant 700 street trees using a mix of natives and deciduous exotic trees,” Mr Stanhope said. “The drought-tolerant species will be selected to match the surrounding landscape and include Ornamental pears, Oaks, Ash trees and Eucalypts.

“A planting contractor will care for the new trees for four months, after which they will be maintained by the Department of Territory and Municipal Services.

“The community is encouraged to be vigilant in reporting any vandalism of the new trees to Canberra Connect on 13 22 81,” Mr Stanhope said.

They plan to plant another 800 trees in Autumn 2011.

Could Stanhope find anything less useful to spend our money on? 2012 can’t come soon enough.

When they do the planting, the might want to drop a reminder note in the residents’ letterboxes that it is illegal to remove street trees.

I remember a street planting program in my suburb about 15 or so years ago – within a couple of weeks at least half a dozen trees in front of nearby houses had been removed by residents.

Another option, is what happened in Kambah. They came around and put a white peg in the ground. They left a note saying the peg will be replaced with a tree, so if you wanted it elsewhere move the peg, and if you didnt want a tree, simply remove your peg. That way, residents can decide if and where their tree is planted.

Please Please Mr Stanhope no more of overly large, prone to dropping branches and or keeling over in storms too easily – gumtrees in residential areas!

The more the merrier I say.

Groan.

Eucalypts are fine *if* an appropriate species is used. In actual fact some of the eucalypts local to our region are well suited to domestic/residential use.”

When we got a note in our letterbox about the trees they were going to plant I looked it up and was surprised that they’d chosen a eucalypt known for having the exact problems that turn people off eucalypts. When they came round to do the planting I dissuaded them from doing our nature strip as we’d been there a few years and already had plenty of trees in the front garden. If they’d insisted on planting that particular type I would have been keeping it pruned very short (couldn’t bear to rip it out but I think many people in the area did).
(Btw I’ve always wondered why it is that in new suburbs some streets get done while still full of building work and others get done long after the residents have moved in and established their gardens?)

700 trees in 65 suburbs? You’re kidding? A little over 10 trees per suburb? What a crock!

How about 700 per suburb?

Geez folks, the aboretum must be as full as the Alexander Motel… no more room for trees cos he has to pay for their upkeep… same goes for putting crims behind bars… doesn’t want to pay for that either… goodonyajohn!!

Maybe you could plant apple trees instead of the ornamental pears John… worked for some other dude once upon a time… hmmm what was his name again???? Oh yeah… Appleseed John

Please Mr Stanhope, MORE gum trees in residential areas!!!

Oh, but they drop their branches, well, on our block we’ve had two exotics that have needed to be removed because they were about to or did fall over.

Thank you Mr Stanhope for looking beyond the arboretum.

and include Ornamental pears

We have these on our nature strip, bloody terrible trees. Drop their seeds all over the place and the blossoms dont smell that nice. Cockatoos like to shred them though.
