I remember hearing a something about a Irish Pub opening in the Belconnen area. Does anyone know if this is true? I hope this wasn’t just a something I imagined in a drunken stuper.

Does anyone know how to scroll through to old stories from a week or two ago, or has that function now disappeared?

you can’t. it fuking sucks.

RSS Readers are capable of doing it – such as http://www.google.com/reader/view/#stream/feed%2Fhttp%3A%2F%2Fthe-riotact.com%2Fwp-rss2.php

I heard there was an irish pub opening up in Kaleen…not near the big supabarn, but on at the other shops.

Ant, my sister lives in Sandy, Utah! (Hates it, BTW) When she discovered the “bloomin’ onion” she rang me laughing so hard I could barely make out what she was saying.

I was poisoned by a “Bloomin Onion” from the Outback Steakhouse (Sandy, Utah) … ugh. All that oil, I had to resort to Imodium (provided by a yank housemate). There’s nothing on that menu that is Australian. But i’m talking about a fake aussie pub in Canberra! We don’t have any. Aussie pubs in country towns are awesome. I’m sure someone could mock one up. complete with gents loos just outside of the public bar, and the ladies needing a map to find it out near the chookhouse.

As for a Turkish pub, I dont’ think they have them. However, Turkish beer is quite drinkable, lightish lager style. They’re muslims but very user-friendly ones. ie they make beer.

the pub near the fire station is going to be bocce (sp?) club i believe. Have been there once not bad but nothing special.. beer from fresh taps is always nice!!

Another fake Irish put, oh goody. Why can’t we have a fake aussie pub? Done up like a country pub, they could model it on one of the fine Bungendore or Yass pubs. We have heaps of Irish pubs, but no aussie ones! Well, there’s the Kingo, I guess.

Obviously never been to an “Outback” restaurant in the states… seriously gaudy in a mick dundee shrimp+barbie way…..

Best Irish pub in canberra is in Reid, at my mates mums house 🙂

Who remembers the mid to late 1990’s institution in Belconnen called Las Vegas….That place rocked.

Interestingly, Ye Olde English Pubbe, The George Harcourt, recently stopped its live music on Sunday afternoons. Word on the grapevine was that the music pulled in the punters, but the particular punters it pulled didn’t spend much.

Had a gig there last year and thought the place was pretty busy (standing room only; people were ordering meals etc); went back when they had a big blues band and the place was jammed; seriously, you couldn’t get near the bar. Which might have been the problem – it was quite oppressively full, which meant people weren’t ordering food or drinks. Also, for me, a venue where you can’t actually hear yourself speak or have a conversation is not a venue I want to spend much time in. If the music’s the focal point I’ll go to a festival or concert; when I go to a pub, I like a bit of atmosphere, including live music, but I also want to be able to order a drink and talk to my friends.

I’m always amused when people book us for a function and then worry that we’ll be offended if people talk over us, stop us for speeches etc. Apart from the fact that if you’re paying, we’ll do whatever the hell you want, we’re there for atmosphere, not giving a concert (though we can do that too if you want!).

Turkish pub? Nifty idea (“the Canberra Casbah”) but there’s probably a dearth of authentic models to draw upon given Turkey’s a Muslim country… Perhaps Rick’s Cafe in Casablanca would do instead?

They bloodily well should! I can’t count how many times I’ve been passed out on the pavement semiconscious craving a beer.

Eh well you can drink beer in bars. I personally think bars are one of the best places you can host bands. Festivals may be better but in a different less personal way.

I would like them to play at my house but I think they may be a little selfish.

I have no problems with the Basement, I go there very regularly. But I would like them to have a little bit more diversity in the genre of music that is played there. That is maybe a reflection on the scene more than what they choose to host (I’m just not sure)

Where would u rather we play?

Why these associations with bands needing to play in bars ?

What’s wrong with The Basement?

Well I was not so overly concerned about what type of pub it is. I would prefer a magical pub with unicorns and leprechauns that spew rainbows when they cry, but I acknowledge I live in Belconnen; Canberra. It would just be nice to have another potential band venue.

Just because a pub has guinness on tap, and a name somewhat derived from ‘flannigan’ does not make it an Irish pub. As long as I can drink guinness though, and the seats aren’t too sticky, I’m pretty much happy anywhere.

(My limit to calling a pub irish is not far from this portrayal – they just need more than one irish beers on tap and more than 5 types of scotch/whiskey avaliable).

The building behind the Belconnen fire station is the Belconnen Lakeview and Bocce Club, They have a bar open and are working on the Bocce rinks out the back.

But that just seems to show the events for that month, not including all the other posts that were made. I’ve been wondering about this too!

Because of course we need another pub that requires a sign to tell you it’s “Irish”.

There’s a new bar called Ha-Ha opening down near Blockbuster on the lake. Apparently it’s gonna be like a Belco version of Trinity. So probably dirtier…

Another Irish pub in Canberra? Geez, hasn’t the Irish pub thing been done to death already? How about a Turkish pub, just for something a bit newer?

Something is being built over near the fire station in Belco that has one of those pub-esque giant beer logo things hanging off it. Not sure if that’s going to be it or was once a club/pub?

There was a vacant store on Nettlefold St that had a large sign on the windows for about a year saying “Irish Pub coming soon”.

Eventually the Irish Pub part of the sign was removed.

It was a crappy place for a pub anyway.
