Just an FYI: the world’s most popular classified ads site, craigslist, just opened a dedicated site for Canberra today. It’s at http://canberra.craigslist.com.au/

I’ve bought and sold entire households worth of stuff on this when I lived in the US. It’s a very user-friendly site, and being non-commercial and community-oriented, ads are free, and you can include pictures and links.

To use it is to love it. And it makes a welcome change from having your listing delayed while someone checks it to make sure you didn’t include an offer to send pictures, like some other classifieds sites we won’t mention.

Craigslist is the seventh most popular site in the US by pageview counts: check http://www.craigslist.org/about/pages.and.peeps.html

now i dunno, but mum always told me not to look at other people’s things. this is craig’s list – keep your eyes off. (although people who can’t use a possessive apostrophe probably deserve what they get)

Oooh, and while over there I used it to flog off my Wal-mart mountain bike at the end of the season! Fully-specced out mountain bike cost me $50, plus a bit more for the flashy blinky lights. Flogged lights and bike for $45 on Craigslist.

Very useful site. I’ve used it a few times to find accommodation for the season in the US. I quite like the ethos behind it, too. Very “olde internet”.

I’m glad that it’s finally made it – I’ve put in a number of requests asking for it (although it’ll be interesting to see how it stacks up with Allclassifieds.com.au)

@kevn love the second link (the first one did work)

Thats the good part. You see something you don’t like (spam etc), and you vote it off the island. Or flag it off craigslist.

No more complaining to god-moderators or unresponsive help desks. You get to take action directly. And strangely enough, it actually works.

Craigslist has always been a tremendous resource for both selling normal goods, but advertising everything from under-the-radar prostitution to crystal meth dealers.
Things immediately advertising such goods\services get removed, so craiglist has developed a certain degree of codified language to avoid this.

Craigslang varies across states and countries.

(So be sure that the Bed and Breakfast advertised really is a B&B and not an all-night prostitute who expects to be fed, and also that the All Day Party With Covercharge is not a hit of ice)

The link for canberra has been on there for weeks. Now they make it live. Hmm.

You’d be hard pressed to furnish your home with only 2 items for sale.

i think there is somewhat of a danger in the lack of monitoring….

“Craigslist is often referred as a risky place to do business because of past criminal activities and fraud on the site” http://www.monstersandcritics.com/tech/news/article_1288805.php/Craigslist_theft_leaves_house_completely_empty

i know i know i should embed the link but i always forget how 🙂
