[ 2 April, 2011 to 17 April, 2011. ] This exhibition at M16 Artspace is outstanding for its luminous colour.
It presents experiments by the artists in expressing the landscapes of south eastern NSW – principally Charlotte Pass, Rosedale Beach and Murramarang National Park.
Ross Andrews shows how varied and experimental watercolour can be. There are au premier coup, single, fast-paced attacks that execute the painting all at once. And there are systematic layers of foreground detail flooded into tiny peaks and contours of rock-like texture that can be enjoyed as infinitesimal micro-landscapes, in compositions that draw the eye toward the mid-picture colours.
Rick Cochrane borrows the gorgeous palette of Gustav Klimt to explore the colours of the Rosedale coastline and the Snowy Mountains. He finds genius loci of the landscape often takes over, making him a medium for its expression, via the sensuous qualities of his oil paint.
