The Chiefly Jon Stanhope has announced his 2009 trade jamboree will be held in Malaysia and Vietnam.

“The mission will be delivered in partnership with Austrade. The ACT Government will support participants by picking up the cost of Austrade’s professional services. The Chief Minister will host a number of networking events, bringing together mission participants and potential customers, as well as holding high-level government-to-government meetings.

The Chief Minister’s Department and Austrade will begin a marketing and recruitment program for the mission early next year. Businesses interested in participating can contact the Business and Industry Development Section of the Chief Minister’s Department on 62053051 or 620 71641.”

For mine Hoi An is the highlight of Vietnam. Anyone want to suggest destinations for our trekking panjandrums and captains of industry?

Does this mean His Chiefliness will be travelling to foreign climes? With the Australian dollar likely to be,um,volatile and Asia being swept into recession, I think this has junket written all over it.

In the olden days of ACT Government, overseas junket meant Politician retiring; but Chieftain Jon survived that trade trip to India, so I won’t hold my breath.

The education as an export idea is interesting. I was at a presentation by a demographer last week who said that the stats indicated that many of the “skilled worker” visas were being taken up by past foreign students who wanted to stay in Australia and couldn’t get the skilled jobs indicated by their quals. I assume they end up working the pointy end of the hospitality industry – as underpaid waiters and taxi drivers.

I’d go with Hoi An, had a great time there. It might have been something to do with the fact that it was my birthday when I was there and I was totally trashed with a Yank, 3 English girls and a German girl at Retreat and Eden Bar.

Danang is close by and considered a business and commerce center of Vietnam after HCMC. If they have the same luck as I did in Danang, they might end up on a street corner drinking Saigon beer with 6 Viet policeman.

Places they should try that I didn’t get too. Dalat, Cat Ba Island

Places not to bother going too – Vinh, Nihn Bihn, Vung Tau
