Canberra’s Charmyne Palavi hits the big time

One of the stars of last night’s much talked about 4 Corners program “Code of Silence” about sex and the National Rugby League was Canberra spray tan artiste, and mother of three, Charmyne Palavi. You can see her video at this link.

This prompted me to do some cursory googling which found some interesting backstory on the famed “NRL Cougar”.

Facebook was even more illuminating.

The Charmyne Palavi Appreciation Society has a bare 29 members and opens thusly:

All you haters out there making fake profiles and surrounding your life around hers (commenting on her constantly) only proves one thing – jealousy.

On the other hand one can also join CHARMYNE PALAVI IS A LYING HEAD CASE which 111 people have opted to do. It has this to say:

    THIS CHICK IS CRAZY.
    SHE LIES.
    SHE IS A THIEF
    SHE IS A WHORE
    SHE IS UGLY
    SHE IS ORANGE

I suspect more than anything she’s enjoying all the attention.

Something all parents should consider before bestowing a first name containing the letter “Y”.

The Heidi Fliess of the NRL!!!

Amazing how social networking and a makeover can turn someone into a gutter celebrity isn’t it?

I knew her face was familiar from somewhere…

I don’t know her from a bar of soap, but I don’t think we’re in a position to judge, no matter how many ys she has in her name or what colour she is… She is obviously in some sort of position of “power” amongst the NRL scene and I think she should be applauded for coming forward knowing that there are already people out there who are willing to make hate groups about her. Wasn’t that one of the points of the Four Corners show – women being afraid to come out and tell the truth about the thugs that the NRL hides.

Point to note that I have written several complaints to the NRL via various websites about my disgusts and disgrace at the truths that came out of the show. They will no longer be getting any money from me, or the sons I may have that would like to play.

oh come on people, how many of you watched the Four Corners episode last night? yes, she might not be to your taste, you might question some of her values and choices but it sounds as if you are all buying into the ’she’s a skank and she deserves what she gets’ line of thinking.

    I actually have no opinion.

As the Streets sang: girl, I reckon you’re about an 8 or a 9, maybe even a 9 1/2 in 4 beers time, that blue top you’ve got on is nice, bit too much fake tan but yeah you score high…

If the thigh high red with side pocket for a riding crop leather boot fits…

Honestly, she looks like a busty blonde oompah loompah. But I guess that many NRL stars don’t go for the girl next door look.

The thing is that if you look up her back-story then a lot of what she said last night takes on a rather different context.

You don’t have to buy into the she’s a skank line of thinking.

i had a little read – but I don’t really understand what she has done wrong.
I’m definitly not into footy guys so don’t agree with her ‘taste’, but why are people so angry to warrant making up a facebook group?
are people denying that she hooked up with them?

    I watched it.

She flaunts hereself on facebook and is said to be using her site to other girls up with players (something she admitted to in the report), anyone with over 3000 ‘friends’ who has been in and out of the media in this community for quite some time and is now getting some airtime on TV is definitely looking for some kind of notoriety, she’d be lapping up the attention. Wait for the book deal, and more interviews I’m sure, any publicity is good right?

If she is so outspoken about the behaviour of these guys then why is she also claiming to be sending other girls their way? She seems to be more on the problem side than the solution side in my eyes.

Another thing I noted in the report was the reference to league players as ‘gladiators’, most of the gladiators I’ve seen in books and films and the like have been locked in chains and caged between bouts.

Perhaps this is the answer the NRL is looking for?

Steady, I believe that ‘cougar’ is an American term for an older woman who sexually preys on younger men. ‘Slut’, well that’s all a matter of perspective. If you take someone like Paris Hilton, the diference between slut and celebrity is about 20 million dollars … in the absence of any evidence of that sort of cash, I believe that what we have here is just plain old common garden variety slut.

I object to her being called a ’slut’. Unless you call all the blokes she has slept with ’sluts’ too.

Yes I am warming up the old chestnut of ‘the male version of a slut is a legend’. It is true and it’s not fair.

I saw the program and I think it is terrible that she was sexually assaulted. She should have gone to the police immediately to lower the chance he could do it to another woman. But I understand there is shame attached to being raped which may have influenced her decision.

I expected more from 4 Corners though – there was no new ground broken in the piece. I feel terrible for the Kiwi who has had her life ruined.

i’m not for a minute suggesting she’s someone a)I’d like to hang out with b)someone who makes good choices or c)not too orange, but the slandering here suggests she’s deserving of what she got.

She may be fairly trashy media glutton but she’s not, nor is any woman, deserving of the word slut, because, as someone else said, you’d have to call the guys that too.

    +1

It’s not necessary to take the low road with this one.

What I can’t understand is why, if she was assaulted, she would then go on to refer other girls to players through her facebook site. That is nuts.

I also thought it was really bad of 4corners to have made the victims, particularly the girl from NZ, re-live the event.

HOw about focusing on the despicable Matty JOhns – 30 years old, takes a “young for her age” nineteen-year-old back to the hotel, then sits back while 10 of his mates subject her to a two-hour ordeal – later labelled “consensual group sex”. Then, on the Footy Show, apologises to his wife, and describes the incident in the third person. Very disconnected, dishonest, rehearsed, prepped, PR-driven approach.

On the topic of links to Canberra, let’s focus on the now-Canberra footballer involved in an assault on a student in northern New South Wales.

Rather than bother with the rather silly, but hardly vulnerable, feisty Ms Palavi (and good on her for going on the show and not being intimidated by the Footy Show neanderthals), it would be more useful for readers to view the footage of horror on the faces of young footballers at the “who’s at fault” question over a male being subjected to homosexual sexual assault when drunk – minutes after they had expressed “all her fault” about a woman in a similar, heterosexual situation with footballers like them. Now there’s a sobering lesson in a culture of rape.

so this young lady basically goes out and looks for footy players to root and also hooks footy players up with other girls. If one of these other girls consents to this then after she has had 13 players have their turn she decides it was not actually that nice. who is to blame?

    Ok, they are sluts.

Most men actually want to be considered a slut, or at least in the position of having sex with multiple partners.

I’m a slut, but although I’m not a racist, I draw the line at sex with bright orange women.

Clearly everybody has a side here, either with the female “victims” or the footballer “victims”. And I do use the word victim loosely. And YES some of the boys are victims here.

However all I have to say, is for those of you stating that because of this program (which I did not watch, I forgot it was on) that you will keep your boys from playing the sport and no longer support it. WAKE UP TO YOURSELF !!! If you cant raise your boys to treat women with respect, then by all means keep them away from the spotlight. But as for also not supporting the game at all, why should the majority have to suffer for the minority’s mistakes.

Think about it this way… Do you also not support K-Rudd because he once went to a strip club ? Are you going to ban your children from swimming because one swimmer assaulted another swimmer ? Stop your kids watching TV and Movies as actors are regularly in rehab, or having affairs etc etc etc. Again.. wake up to yourself…

Why doesn’t the person who posted this story send the link to the NRL…maybe they might find it interesting. What I want to know is…why was she in a room with all those football players. I don’t condone what they did but yet, why was she all on her own.

I knew a girl who purposely slept with a famous football player (who is retired now) and bragged to all of us how she got free tickets etc and then stole his football gear. I’ve seen how some of these women act when they see famous players. They flirt and carry on, some of them ask for trouble.

Here’s a thing about parenting that I hold to be true. A boy learns how to treat women from the example set by his father. A girl will learn how she should expect to be treated by a man from the way that her father treats her mother and the other women he interacts with.

Young men don’t just make this stuff up as they go. They behave like this because they believe it’s within the bounds of what a young man can do. They make these choices because the responsibility of teaching boys to be men has been abdicated by the important role models in their life.

This, I believe, goes to the core of both ‘sides’ of this issue. I played footy (of various codes) for the best part of half my life and I never did anything that I would be ashamed of if my parents or others whom I respected were to find out about (well ok there was that one incident where the driver of the bus wouldn’t stop on the way home from Crookwell … but I digress).
