37,000 CDs available – FREE!

As I type, I’m enjoying one of the 37,000 albums that I have at home thanks to the ACT Public Library.

The Library subscribes to an online goldmine called the Naxos Music Library.

In a nutshell, the Naxos Music Library offers streaming audio access at near-CD quality to the complete catalogues of over 200 labels – the world’s largest online music library. It is very user-friendly and amazingly comprehensive. Its aim is to eventually offer access to every work of classical music ever recorded.

All that’s required is an internet connection and the barcode and PIN from your library card. From the Library homepage, use the ‘Find’ dropdown menu > ‘Listen to Music and Audio‘. I connect my laptop to my stereo via a standard small jack out/twin RCA in (i.e. same as iPod to stereo)

Why the ACT Library doesn’t promote this stunning resource more, I have no idea. Moving in musical circles through various choirs, in the last few years I have met maybe five people who know about the Naxos Music Library. Anyway, I thought I’d help them get better value for money out of it.

Happy listening!

Awesome! They have an excellent collection of John Williams stuff. I’m going to be up all night now.

I must must must also let it be known that you can also get almost every single newspaper (FULL digital copies) on the planet at this site (Click Library Press Display; The other sites are useless: http://www.library.act.gov.au/find/read/news ), with access free thanks to the ACT public library. It has saved me $100s and definitely has helped me with many assignments.

An excellent hidden resource. They also have an online ebook library where you ‘borrow’ ebooks, and heaps of online resources.

They really should promote all this free stuff.

Also, did you know that the National Library has heaps of digitised, searchable newspapers available for free to anyone, even if they aren’t a member of the library?
