Cherries from Young every Sat till Christmas!

On my travels today I came upon a cherry stall on Isabella Drive, between Kellett Street and the Chisholm shops (Gowrie side of Isabella Drive). As Christmas and cherries seem to go hand in hand, I thought some Rioters may wish to indulge!

I bought a $10 punnet (aproximately the size of a lunchbox, ie 16 cm long, 8 cm wide and 11 cm high). This seems good value for these excellent quality cherries. There is also a $20 container available.

I was told that the cherries are sorted before packing, so there are no duds, and this was proved right when I scoffed quite a number this arvo – no duds, and they are delish!

The hawkers told me they would be there every Saturday until Xmas.

Last summer I got some awesome ones quite cheap at the Bus Depot markets. :)

Wash them – Young has the highest cancer rate in the country due to the pesticides, I’m informed by a friend who farms near Young!

Best cherries are from NW Tas, but as that isn’t feasible, we’re off to Young soon. There was someone selling cherries roadside on the Fed Hwy just before the Sutton exit. I assume these are locally grown (I didn’t stop to find out)

There is also another cherry vendor on the Fed Hwy just before the Horse Park Dr turn off (heading out of Canberra).

There’s another vendor selling well priced good value cherries at $8 a kilo. They have outlets at Jamison, Kippax, Cooleman Court and Civic I think. Pretty sure they call themselves Aldi.

If they are selling the cherries by the side of the road then they are probably not the grower, so you are probably getting 2nds. But if you are happy with the quality for the price you are paying then its all good. There are a few growers from Young and also Orange selling cherries at the farmers markets. I also got some certified organic cherries from young from a shop in Nth Lyneham which were cheaper than the cherries in Woolworths. They tasted great and i will be trying to get them for the length of the season. #5 I have been in Aldi and consider fresh produce one of their failings….

I got some big cherries for $10 a kilo at the Southside Markets on Sunday, plus another kilo from another vendor for $4 which were great for jam-making (they were much smaller).

All Cherry Orchards use Pesticides. As they do for Apples, Peaches, Pear etc

PS – vendor said they were helping their friends who own the farm, and that the cherries were only picked and sorted the day before.

Also there on Sundays, I notice.
