Same sex marriage rally in Garema Place this Saturday

28 November, 2009
1:00 pm

If you’re in Civic this Saturday 28th November around 1pm, consider popping over to the Equal Marriage Rights rally in Garema Place. This one’s planned as a response to the Senate Inquiry into the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill 2009, which is coming out on the 26th.

It’s part of a national day of action, but the Canberra rallies have traditionally been fairly small compared to the other capitals – possibly because so many of us think it’s a no-brainer. So we all need to get out there and show parliament just how bored we are with this ongoing issue.

There’s more info on the Equal Love website.

    FYI

The Senate committee’s report into the Marriage Equality Amendment Bill can be read here

A majority of the committee has recommended that the bill not be passed. They’re just not very sure why. Apparently law reform is hard and a bit scary. Easier to coo vague platitudes about the importance of equality and do nothing.

Tasmanian Liberal Senator Guy Barnett goes a bit feral in his dissenting report. He opposes the bill too – just in a much more transparent fashion. He thinks that allowing more people to marry would undermine the privilege of marriage. I wonder what he thinks about universal suffrage.
