Canberra based Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) company Cloud Central has launched its beta service before starting its full paid service next year. According to this CRN report Cloud Central will be one of a handful of Australian companies, and the only in the ACT, offering cloud compute resources. Based on Xen virtualisation (Yuk! Give me VMware any day), HP & Sun hardware, and located in the TransACT data centre (spitting distance from RiotACT) in the heart of Canberra, government agencies would be likely targets.
I’m not sure many government agencies are ready to see their most confidential and critical data hosted on a commercial cloud, intermingled with an assortment of other data and services. I expect in the near future some government agencies will be convinced (coerced) into a whole of government cloud, within a government data centre. Anyway, I guess we’ll see how many dip their toes into the water as this particular cloud precipitates in the new year.
That would be the TransACT data centre which experienced another power outage recently?

Federal government isn’t allowed to use cloud computing in this manner for anything classified above UNCLASSIFIED, unless they get a formal waiver or dispensation from their department head. Of course, it could be targetted at non government clients (yes, they do exist).
They can have my data…. after they pry it out of my cold, dead hands.
I understood all the words in the OP, but unfortunately not in that order.
That’s bull. The company I work for is ACT-based and has been offering cloud to clients for over 2 years.

VMWare? Are you serious?
Xen is almost certainly the right technology for IAAS. VMWare is expensive, cumbersome and less flexible. Linux paravirtualisation under Xen is very efficient and you can squeeze a lot of performance out of a Xen host. Plus you don’t have to pay a ton for useful stuff like “vmotion” which Xen just does without making a big song and dance about it.
Ask Amazon if they would consider VMWare and they would laugh at you…
