The “central” dog park locale announced.

Our chiefly leader informs us that he’s decided to build a “central” off leash dog park between Weston Park and the golf course.

This is particularly noteworthy because the area is:

1) Already an off leash area with lots of what dogs really want (space to run).

2) An amazing central locale which everyone will have to drive to.

Only in Canberra.

Yarralumla has so many dog walking spots already. So much space where a dog can get a little off leash action. I wonder if the residents association have an opinion. Maybe this might be for all the new lakeside apartments they want to build in the area.

Such a dumb idea on location.

Ah Weston Park, so convenient. I suppose that geographically it is kind of central, however there’s only one road in, it’s on a freaking peninsula! Well done Stanhope, you peanut. I’ll just take my dogs to Grevillea Park anyway.

It’s central in relation to the other dog parks, the two previous ones are in Belconnen and Tuggeranong being north and south of the new one (making the new one central). If Tuggers and Woden had one and one was built in Belco it probably would have been announced as ‘north’. A dog park is more than an off-leash area in particular in (obviously) needs to be fenced.

Though it’s hardly scientific, with only 164 votes, Weston Park did at least manage a plurality when this earlier went to a RiotACT poll.

Its more than just an off leash area. Its a large fenced in area, with facilities for dogs. My dad takes his dog to the Tuggeranong dog park and the dogs generally love it there and run around play with each other. Surely using an existing off leash area is an ideal spot for a dog park.

If you took away some other park to make it a dog park, i reckon there would be a lot more people complaining. Most people i’ve seen drive to the dog parks also, so location is really about minimising driving time to the park.

So where should they have put it “where everyone wouldn’t have to drive to”?? Seems you have to drive to get to anywhere in this city.

Lots of people use Weston Park as a recreational location, so this just means you can now take your dog for some legal ‘off leash’ action.

Dear Mr Stanhope, please can I have a new goldfish bowl for my goldfish and our rabbit needs a new hutch, the cat could go with a new cat litter and the pet Cockatoo could use a new aviary or somewhere safe to fly on the southside. We used to pay for these things ourselves but if we vote for you I hear pet owners can have anything they want now…

That’s funny, I see enough examples every day to think that pretty much everywhere in Canberra is an off-leash dog park.

Swaggie, by your reckoning the government should only pay for what? Even if the whole ACT budget went to education and hospitals, they wouldn’t be perfect and may not be much better than they are now. Beaurocracy has a way of wasting money regardless.

At least a dog park is encouraging people to get out and about, i could think of far many worse things the governemnt could pay for. I doubt the cost of a dog park is much at all, fencing some park benches and some dog friendly water fountains.

If they build enough, then if they have to ban dogs off leash out side dog parks, at least there is an option. They could just ban it and not provide dog parks……
