Looting the arboretum

The Canberra Times has details on another heist at the new arboretum:

It is believed the thieves gained entry to the arboretum on foot.

A Department of Land and Property Services ute left on the site was used to transport the thieves to the dragon tree lot, before they scaled a small electric fence designed to prevent entry by animals such as kangaroos to gain access to the trees.

It is believed the trees were then transported from the lot to the boundary of the arboretum and were then transferred from the stolen ute to a waiting vehicle.

It sounds like a lot of work for trees worth just $300 each. Given the fuss being made over the care required by the dragon trees one has to wonder if someone inside the arboretum had an inflated sense of their importance.

Kramer: we have nothing better to do here in Canberra than steal garden bits. Try it, you will feel so much better.

What’s that Skip? You know 2 blokes with a ute who can help?

Its a cultural tradition.

Only in Canberra do people take their gardens so seriously that they steal plants and garden supplies… eg. tree thefts from private gardens, woodchips being pilfered from govt stocks, newly delivered landscaping materials being taken from nature strips…
