Simon Corbell has looked across the solar panels adorning the rooves of Canberra’s well to do and found it pleasing.

So now he’s expanding the feed in tariff scheme:

The Government has agreed to establish an expanded feed-in tariff scheme with the following elements;

— An overall scheme cap of 240 MW of generating capacity;
— Large scale generation category for generators larger than 200 KW (category cap of 210 MW);
— Medium scale generation category for generators between 30KW and 200kw (category cap of 15 MW); and,
— Existing micro generation category (household rooftop) up to 30KW (category cap of 15 MW).

“The expansion of the scheme will occur in two steps, with medium scale generation suitable for larger areas such as shopping centres, warehouses and large office buildings, to occur first through amendments to the existing Electricity Feed-In (Renewable Energy Premium) Act 2008,” Mr Corbell said.

“The second step will involve the introduction of separate legislation for large scale generation with provision of premium payments to be allocated through an auction process.

Here comes your future.

UPDATE: The Greens’ Meredith Hunter is impressed.

Instead he should reduce or eliminate taxes on generators of sustainable energy and recoup the cost by taxing producers of non-sustainable energy.

That way, consumers are rewarded for purchasing sustainable energy and punished for buying the dirty stuff.

You surely dont mean a carbon tax…

Solar power is inefficient and is attracting users purely because of government subsidies.

Not as useless as wind power though.

You’re completely wrong.

I bet you’re a Liberal voter. You seem to have severe issues dealing with reality.

There are communities overseas that are doing great things with solar and it doesn’t involve large solar farms, all roof tops, sides of buildings bus shelters and other services are including solar in their design.

My parents two previous houses have been powered by hybrid solar/wind and the wind turbine out performs the solar by a significant margin. It was also significantly cheaper to install.

By increasing the feed-in tariff he’s not rewarding generators of sustainable energy – he’s punishing users by increasing its price.

Those poor users who enjoy burning their way through millions of kilowatt hours of dirty energy without having to pay a price that reflects its true cost? My heart bleeds.

Pity he can’t get his mates on the Hill to change the cruel penalties imposed by Centrelink where pensioners have any money gained from the feed-in tariff scheme deducted from their pension. The Rudd government brought this in at the same time as the pension rise in 2008.

Nothing like leading with both your chin and error. This situation was changed in May this year. Now if pensioners go with solar and take the feed-in as a credit into their energy account, the credit is not counted as income. If you don’t do this, but take it as a separate direct payment, then that does count as income towards thresholds for benefits (not a deduction of the amount of the payment from the amount of the pension).

For those kiddies jumping on the bandwagon for the rort – onya.

For the hippies doing it to save the planet – hahahahahahahahahahah!

It’s so damned obvious that this is arse backwards.

It would be good to see a thorough economic/financial analysis of this. On one hand, the government (ie us through our taxes) doesn’t have to pay upfront for the capital cost of a solar power station, and we use all that ‘wasted’ space on rooftops. We also don’t have a single point of failure.

On the other hand, if it is being paid for through the feed-in tariff, it means the producer is being paid a massive premium that will inevitably be paid for by us through our taxes.

Either way, we pay. I would like to see the balancing act.

If they have changed policy to this extent, then there should be a thorough policy analysis out there to allow government to make an informed choice.
