G’day ….this is another paintball update, so as always, if not interested please feel free to look elsewhere 🙂

The ACT Firearms amendments passed last night, including three paintball specific provisions:
1. The approval of personal ownership of markers in the ACT.
2. The recognition of interstate/international ownership eg you can take your martker to NSW and vice versa.
3. The participation age has been reduced to 16.

Now, I don’t know the final wording yet or any conditions attached to the above, but it is a step in the right direction!

I will post updates at when I have them, for those interested!

We will look at having a ‘gala’ day with demonstrations etc some time soon!

cheers, Kieran

ant051 – talk to kieranap on this site, hes down southside, or theres a field at piallago which is reasonble.

Every 6 months or so Im involved in a game so I’ll post something closer to when we are going to play (definetly not the season at the moment to be playing).

New to this..been playing rec paintball for a while and keen on getting into it a bit more, so i’d be up for a day on the fields if anyone is looking on making up numbers or putting a day together.

Nah, they just like to hide in the bushes and ‘spray’ members of the other ‘team’.

2 in one. Aim for the head, fire, out comes the moron.

Sorry, should have said ‘spray’.

kapow kapow, flap flap flap.

You’ve been out of water for a very long time now WMD – flap flap flap you stupid little fish.

I played indoor paintball in Canada (think laser tag with paintball guns, I mean markers…).

Any chance of that happening here?

I’m keen if it doesnt clash, only played the one time at outer Gungahlin.

Deadmandrinking11:53 pm 05 Jul 08

Never said I didn’t, Maelinar. I just pick good targets.

Jakez, when it warms up we’ll let you know when we are next painting. – same comment goes for Jazz.

Since the last paintball session I organised was undersubscribed, we’ll limit the attendance to people who have paid deposits beforehand. I can guarantee the RA Admins will meet somebody that they all know, but has not ever posted on this site – a keen paintballer though.

Otherwise, as Thumps said, when it gets warmer we will send around a relevant email.

P.S. Katy, Simon and Jon, you play for free. Come meet some constituents.

Great job admitting you fire missiles deekhead. Welcome to the mouse-trap.

Deadmandrinking10:42 pm 05 Jul 08

Great job ignoring my missile. Best not get involved when you haven’t the brains to reply 😉

Wow, somebody’s missle must have been a dud, on account of its still on the ignore list…

@bigfoot – gratz.

@admins – is there a rank above protagonist ?

and btw Thumper for Admin.

and Che, don’t forget I respekt you, and so should everybody else. I’ve just not been quick enough on the dial to get in on time.

Wow, I moved from Newbie to Troublemaker.

How exciting…….

I cracking a bottle of shiraz to celebrate.

What? I can’t call it a gun? I can’t say I am shooting at someone? I can’t make fun of the person I shot by saying I totally wasted them? There is no more red dye, simulating blood?

Where has all the fun gone?

use green and think that you “killed”them underwater….

yay I can shoot 16 year olds now

I’m not quite with this comment – does it mean :

Yay I can play, I’m now 16 ?
Yay, I am able to play against 16 year olds ?

Also, you don’t shoot people on account of shooting people is currently illegal. Read my post above re: terminology and paintball for some nice hints.

ok, what if we say we are going to pepper some poor sod until they look like a leopard at the gym / exercise / summer with all the bruises?

The comment about 16-year olds is that the entry age is 16, not 18. 16-year olds seem to have far more violent tendencies than older people, or at least they think so.

I personally have found that the only people who shouldn’t participate in paintball are the ones that don’t listen to the rules – getting to line up and blast them after they are caught lifting or removing their helmet / mask “in play” is very satisfactory….

then again, I just look for a handy vantage point and save my paint projectiles by picking people off one by one, must be the reason I don’t play much anymore….

Deadmandrinking8:23 pm 05 Jul 08

How is it going to be the first one, Maelinar?

Do you know English?

The act even refers to them as ‘paintball markers’ : http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/b/db_32185/current/pdf/db_32185.pdf

You are lucky that paintball is quiet and smokeless. You’ve managed to lobby to get the ACT gov’t and AFP to agree to relax an aspect of Firearm laws, yet there still isn’t a drag strip…

yay I can shoot 16 year olds now

But in practice 90% of clients at my field call it a gun 🙂

Good to hear 🙂

Of course. Any excuse to play again is good enough for me

Grumpy Smurf5:48 pm 04 Jul 08

Jazz – sounds awesome, but back to the original post….
How long has it taken for the Firearms Amendments to get through? (how much hassle has there been during comps etc for interstaters to bring in their own gear? From what i hear the organisers had to jump through hoops to get special permissions). As much as I’m glad this finally got passed in the Assembly, is this just the polies trying to look pretty ready for the election in October? Can we invite them out for a session – I know where I’d like to see a bruise on Sonic.

oooh yes please. an excuse to run around and vent some aggression? I am in.

@Skid: Yep, thats me, hence the ‘AP’….wasn’t trying to make a big deal of that though given the whole 2CA viral thing….(although more than happy for Missjill to model some of the smaller cams 🙂

Kieran

I second that request…..

@fnaah, WMC above…in this day and age of course the use of the term gun has negative connotations, however, the use of the term ‘gun’ has many definitions in common use (as per WMC nail gun and caulking gun, as well as spear gun etc) which do not relate directly to a ‘gun’.

The legal definition of a what is commonly refrred to as a ‘gun’ actually refers to a firearm in legal/AFP definitions. A ‘firearm’ fires ammunition which is normally a combination of a ‘propellant’ and a ‘projectile’. Paintball markers do not fire ammunition, but do fire a CO2 propelled ‘projectile’.

Longwinded way of saying there are many reasons for not calling a paintball marker a ‘gun’, some historical as per my previous email, and some legal etc . But in practice 90% of clients at my field call it a gun 🙂

WMC, I think there is also a big push from the paintball enthusiasts to distance themselves from the word “gun”.

If you define “gun” as somehting with a barrel that uses propellant to expel a projectile, then yes, it’s a gun – but so is a teenager with a straw and a wad of chewed up paper.

Woody Mann-Caruso3:50 pm 04 Jul 08

Ah. I shall have to go home and relabel my nail ‘dispenser’ and caulk ‘applicator’.

The viral thing gets wheeled out when a single-post wonder puts up something easily linked to a brand which otherwise has no news content, and they don’t pay advertising occasionally.
(ie: “Did you notice that Store XXX is offering a YY% discount to students who bring in Z or more friends?”, or “Wow, when I was listening to (Serendipity Skimbleshanks on ABC National Drivetime or Suresh and Randy on FM105.5) they mentioned (public relations and marketing hyped incident), does anyone know where I can get my copy of (apparently scandalous item) before they sell out?”)

Others either have a degree of deserved goodwill associated with them, (like Gary Singh of a certain restaurant which makes a fine butter chicken), or people who are willing to join in RiotACT and be normal humans as well as posters (Troy Williams, Candidate for Fraser, for example).

You score get to fall into both categories as paintball is fun, (the paint only tastes bad the first time, and bruises heal), have been posting here since 2006, and score bonus points for the previous ad-buy, helping to keep Johnboy and Jazz off the streets.

@Skid: Yep, thats me, hence the ‘AP’….wasn’t trying to make a big deal of that though given the whole 2CA viral thing….(although more than happy for Missjill to model some of the smaller cams 🙂

Kieran

Kieran, aren’t you also the guy who runs Adventure Paintball (hence the kieranAP), out behind Calwell?

Very good news to see some sensible legislation (oxy moron?) coming out of the Legislative Assembly.

I’m dying (sorry Maelinar) to play paintball, but it’s hard to find enough friends to want to do it with me. I guess I run with the wrong crowds.

I also didn’t know how far political correctness had entered into the world of paintball. Wouldn’t want the kiddies to get the wrong idea I suppose…

@Avy: I agree
@fnaah: still waiting for the AFP to work out the implementation of the legislation, but then you will be able to own a marker!
@BerraBoy 68: send me an email, I sponsor a semi pro team, hold novice tournaments etc (follow link in original post)
@WMC: Not really PC. Markers evolved from CO2 powered devices used to ‘mark’ cattle with paint dye in the US over 30 years ago. These paint dye ‘markers’ were modified over time to become the paintball ‘markers’ of today.. so not really PC…
@Peterh: I agree 🙂

cheers, Kieran

WMC – a paint marker is not a ‘gun’.

It’s also not very correct to call a paintbrush a gun.

Unfortunatly, in this modern world of ‘guns’ and other violence inspiring wording, its VERY necessary to differentiate between what is, and what isn’t, a gun. It was VERY foolish for paint markers to be categorised as ‘guns’ in the first place.

On a side note, its also why you don’t say ‘Your dead’, or ‘I killed you’ to an otherwise living person you just either tagged or marked with your marker.

I’m somewhat taken to believe that is also why they no longer use red paint in paintball – although this merely heresay I’m now reflecting.

Played Paintball once for a work outing and had a ball. Can anybody advise what is the cost of getting into paintball as a sport and how do you go about joining, or creating, a team?

did you have 2 balls before you played??

a box is a wise investment….

Woody Mann-Caruso2:22 pm 04 Jul 08

Stupid question – is a ‘marker’ what most people would call a ‘gun’? Has the world gone so PC that we can’t call a gun a gun anymore?

Wooo! Is there any provision for sales of markers in the ACT?
