A misspelling? 2CC’s interesting tweets on the Japanese

By 9 January 2012 14

2cc tweet

Here in the Eagle’s Nest eyebrows were raised this afternoon when this above tweet came out of talkback radio:

2CC @2CC
Sea Sheppard reps captured by the japs, asking for it? Let us know your thoughts.. ow.ly/8mm89

But 20 minutes later we were even more intrigued by this strange mea culpa:

miss spelled tweet

2CC @2CC
Retracting miss spelled tweet! Activists pushing too hard on Japanese ships? ow.ly/8mmE8

Would it have been OK if it was mister spelled?

Gosh… not sure if I want to even poke this thread with a twenty-foot pole.

But then the short form for various race/nationality appears to be the norm these days.
As long as you don’t say it to their face it is probably harmless.

On the other hand I’ve been on the receiving end, being called an “Aussie” by a Jap. It sounded slightly hostile…

It’s Twitter.

It’s not the first tweet I thought was any more than eyebrow raising. It’s trying to pretend it didn’t happen.

We call them “Aussies”, “Yanks”, “Poms”, “Frogs”, “Micks” and “Krauts”, and we call them “Japs”. Apology was pathetic.

Dear 2CC, why not just save time and send people either here or here.

(Blocked from work? Have a shorter version)

It ‘s just possible that they are referring to the spelling of shepherd as sheppard, and haven’t even thought about the racist angle.

Unlikely but possible.

Um isn’t the misspelled word Shepherd?

That certainly stuck out for me a lot more than Japs (sorry, “japs”).

Ah tweets, the refuge of the serious egotist, and cause of so much hilarity.

Has there ever been a worse or more pathetic form of communication?

Nope. On both counts.

Apart from Esperanto, enlighten me.

I am sick of the relic penissauruses at 2cc. They claim to represent something but are really motivated by their sponsors and adverts. Illy bloody coffee gimmie a break. It’s not WW2 anymore you racists. Japan are our allies now – I for one are proud of it.

I’m sure there’s a place in Fyshwick called “Jap car parts” or something similar. A lot of people evidently don’t think it is offensive.

Considering the Japanese do exactly the same thing I don’t think it’s a problem- they shorten the polite word “gaikokujin” (literally “outside country person”) to the more casual “gaijin” ( or “outside person”) all the time, and use it as both a normal word and a racial slur. You hear it plenty when they’re talking about you when they think you can’t understand it… and amusingly will still use it when they’re in a foreign country, despite being the foreigners themselves…
