A new generation of Canberrans get to see tricky ricky get punched in the head?

The Telegraph is warning that Raiders Legend Ricky Stuart is a big chance to return to Canberra next year as coach.

(That’s right Dave, you have the board’s full support)

Let me get out of the way that Stuart as a player was magnificent, inspirational even. It’s hard to imagine the premiership Raiders sides of yesteryear winning the games they won without him. (who can forget the endless inquisitions of his groin).

But he also made an unfavourable impact on the Canberra nightlife of his era. Amongst Gen-X Canberra males you’re hard pressed to find one who hasn’t at least heard a story about Ricky being an arse and getting smashed at 3am somewhere in Civic.

On the other hand we’ve all mellowed since then, so maybe so has he?

While we’re not entirely convinced by Ricky’s coaching record at NSW he’d be hard pressed to do worse than current Raiders management.

As a big fan of one of Stuart’s former teams, I can only warn of the problems he causes on his way out. His relationship with our club’s board became strained and ever since he has leaked and backgrounded (often untruthfully) against the club.

As long as he is onside, he is a committed, hard working and passionate coach who has plenty of time to chat to fans at meet-and-greets etc. But once the end times are in sight, he becomes dangerous.

Reminds me of Yeats:
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed……

Dear Raiders, proceed with caution!

Well he is a premiership winning coach. Couldn’t do any worse.
