Have an awful garden? Live in Belconnen? Maybe some volunteers will fix it up for you (probably not).

This Saturday, volunteers from BCS, Housing ACT, and Beer Wine Spirits will band together to clean up 10 lucky gardens in the Belconnen area as a part of the 10/10 project.

The 10/10 Project began as an opportunity for BCS employees and their families to give something back to our community and to experience the wonderful world of volunteering. The ten households whose yards will be cleaned up are all engaged in one or another of BCS’s many programs. BCS employees work with community members at all stages of life to assist through programs providing transport to medical appointments, disability care, social inclusion and family support. In the course of this work, BCS has become aware of a critical gap in services for garden maintenance.

In 2012, BCS employees took it upon themselves to provide a one-off garden clean-up for 10 households in the Belconnen area. The experience was a rewarding one for everyone involved. This year, the BCS volunteers are joined by employees from Housing ACT and BWS. The garden clean up can make all the difference for some householders. Upon being informed that their registrations for the project had been accepted, participants made the following responses:

“It will be such a pleasure to be able to go out in my backyard again. It’s been so stressful looking out the windows at it. Thank you so much to everybody that’s getting involved”.

“I feel like I’ve won the Lotto. I’ll finally be able to have my kids and grandchildren over for Christmas dinner.”

Volunteers will work from 8am-12 midday and again from 1pm-5pm. In the middle of the day, the volunteers and householders will share lunch at Belconnen Community Centre.
