The award winning, Abode Woden

Abode – The Apartment Hotel is very excited to announce that it’s third hotel, Abode Woden, is award-winning before the doors have even opened.
Due to open in August, Abode Woden won the Commercial Sustainable Construction category at the 2013 Master Builders Association Excellence in Building Awards, held last week.

The award is very fitting with the new hotel targeted to be the first Green Star and NABERS rated hotel in Australia; a very exciting achievement for a Canberra hotel brand.

Abode – The Apartment Hotel Managing Director, Nick Georgalis said, “We are very proud to have been honoured in the commercial sustainable category at the MBA Excellence in Building Awards as it highlights what we have set out to achieve for our business and our brand. We are not only seeking a Green Star rating tool for Abode Woden (a refurbishment of Juliana House), but are actively working with the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) to customise Green Star and adapt it to suit hotels. This not only demonstrates leadership in achieving the first Green Star rating for a hotel, but will also drive industry transformation by setting clear benchmarks for hotels and mixed use projects.”

It’s not difficult to open a really good hotel, so of course it looks good now. Question is how good this and the other new hotels will look in say 5yrs, 10yrs.

I still remember when the then newly-wed Prince Charles and Lady Spencer stayed at the Canberra Rex. How things change! I can feel the dirt just by looking at that place.

All night, or just an hour?

They have a big sign on top of the building saying they are opening soon and that they are now taking bookings.

Have to say I like those bed side lamps, wish the damn lighting shops would sell ones like that.

I hope it’s better than the ‘award winning’ office block I have recenly worked in, which had serious air conditioning problems and things kept falling apart.

Still looks horrible from the outside, however.

Ah it will be forever Juliana House!

Sweet memories (and some not so sweet) of my many years working there. The photo looks like the SES corner office – windows on 2 sides. I am assuming that parking isnt offered here – you get to park out the front with all the workers?? I am guessing they are looking at the Monday to Friday business (probably Giovernment) traveller for most of their clientele…
