ACT Policing is teaming up with Bunnings Warehouse this weekend to provide members of the community free security advice on how to protect their homes and prevent break-ins in the lead up to the Christmas holidays.
Between 10am to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday (3 and 4 November), ACT Policing members will be at Bunnings Warehouse stores to answer any of your home security questions, and will be distributing free home security packs with 24 hour light timers, magnetic home security checklists and home and personal security guides.
There will also be a ‘How to secure your home’ workshop at 12.30pm on both days, and free Constable Kenny Koala helium balloons for children attending the stalls.
Sergeant Peter Collins from ACT Policing Crime Prevention said it is important for members of the community to protect their homes as much as possible against burglary, especially when they are planning to go on holidays.
“While house burglaries in the ACT have significantly decreased by 28.3 per cent (financial year 2011-2012) when compared to last financial year (2010-2011), we still need you to take measures to secure your home from opportunistic thieves this upcoming holiday season.”
“We generally see an increase in burglaries during the Christmas/holiday season, and through providing these practical do-it-yourself home security workshops, we hope to help minimise the chance of Canberra homes being targeted,” Sergeant Collins said.
Neighbourhood Watch members will also be attending the ACT Policing stalls to provide information and advice, and how to get involved with your local Neighbourhood Watch.
Bunnings ACT Operations Manager Craig Wallace said that Bunnings is pleased to be joining forces with ACT Policing again this year to provide local residents with information and advice on how to protect their homes.
“Last year’s home security weekend provided our customers and local residents the opportunity to talk with the experts on home security, and we’re hoping this weekend is just as successful,” he said.
