Well who doesn’t like a big explosion?

This one was posted by Actew with this note:

Controlled blasts occur regularly onsite at the Enlarged Cotter Dam but are rarely seen due to necessary safety clearance zones. Check out this blast filmed in March 2011.

Remember the old Canberra hospital demolition. It seems you can NEVER be too overzealous.

How far is “necessary” for a safety clearance zone?

The reason I ask is because I’d like to know when does it stop being necessary and start being overzealous?

It’s situational. There are many factors to consider such as the amount of explosive, the type of explosive, the intent of the detonation (eg structural cutting versus bedrock rupturing), the nature of the material being destroyed etc.

I’ve been pretty close to a lot of explosions, and my view is that you can never be too far away from them. They’re best enjoyed on video.
