Airbrushed poster child Jackson still jerking the Capitals around

The Canberra Times has a depressing story of confusion at the Capitals as Lauren Jackson plays a will she or won’t she game over the 2013 season.

Given a choice between investing in young talent or ageing big names a smart team bets on youth every time.

But in the minds of those who fund the Capitals it’s not so much a team as a Lauren Jackson support mechanism.

It would be nice to see the Caps betting on the future and waking up from the dreams of past glories.

Lauren is surely a classic case of a very big fish in a rather small Canberra pond. She is, and has for quite some time, been a hero to many and, so far as I am aware, has behaved respectably – the latter point confirmed, I assume, by a profile last week on the squeaky-clean Better Homes and Gardens. With all of this, it is hardly surprising that a degree of sentiment, rather than just cold logic, is at work here. Lucky, perhaps, for Lauren that she doesn’t have Young Liberals organising against her.

🙂
I don’t think she’s into us, men. I used to know her socially very well. She is, actually, a nice chick.
But yes, I don’t see what the problem is, she’s free to chose whatever country to play. When she was still 22, she went to play for a club in Siberia (off-season here), one month’s worth of games (incl.finals)- 250 K US dollars (A$ had crap exchange rate back then). That was 10 years ago. And she’s financially secured.
She did Canberra proud for many years, and she’s not obliged to play here.

I think it’s just the way he is.

That, or everyone, everything and every place in Canberra has said no to him.

Which is probably more likely.

Did this lady say no to you at some point JB? Sheesh.

Her financial future depends on the influence of someone who has just fallen from grace and is “retiring from public life”.
She should seek new pastures ASAP.

She crippled herself kicking arse and taking names at the Olympics, lay-off JB.

Wrong and wrong. Jackson is the difference between winning the title and not even qualifying for the finals. Plus the Capitals HAVE invested in youth – but the nature of the WNBL means the best players are constantly looking overseas to make real money – and the best of the rest change teams every couple of seasons looking for a slightly better deal. The constant shuffling of players means they generally don’t/can’t build towards a “premiership window” like football teams can.
