The interesting bit of any arts festival is generally the “fringe”. In Canberra the Fringe now appears to be a wholly independent entity going by the name of “Fringe 09” and even I can barely remember what it’s a fringe of.

In any event Fringe Director Jorian Gardner has announced that the irrepressible Alice Cottee has signed on as Creative Producer (apparently that means 2IC).

‘“I am very pleased that Alice Cottee has decided to take up the position of Creative Producer,” said Mr Gardner. “She is a highly capable arts practitioner and one of Canberra’s finest singer / songwriters and musicians. I am looking to Alice to essentially help take control of this years Fringe which will be held February 6-14 in Civic Square and at other venues across Canberra. I have admired her work for a very long time and am excited that her input, creativity and ideas will be part of this year’s festival.

“Her experience, knowledge of Canberra and its music scene and her high level of capability in organising gigs within the nation capital and beyond will be invaluable to Fringe ’09’

With Chanel Cole as publicist Jorian’s building a formidable (albeit slightly terrifying) team.

Fringe 09 opens on 6 February.

And the fanny shot on her Myspace site sets the tongues wagging.

I think that the Fringe will do better than the disater surrounding the new artistic director of the Multicultural Festival. They have alianated many in the arts community so much so they are doing their own thing and bringing their own acts during the MCF. Also their website is awwwwwweful, providing little detail about events on.

Oh Alice looks HOT in those fishnets.

If Jorian Gardner was really any good at this ‘arts’ business, shouldn’t he have moved to Melbourne by now?

Mr Evil I’m still at the same workplace and it is not a gov job.
And definately nothing arty farty about what we do, well maybe sometimes a very little bit but still quite different from the fringe.

Curiouser and curiouser!

Go Alice!

Hey, c’mon Mr Evil, it’s a job that needs to be done if canberra is to get the fringe festival (which I quite like), she does it. What more needs to be done?

Most of you work for the government…

Has she ever had a real job, or has she only ever worked in arty farty govt-funded stuff?

My Dad picks his nose, then goes to Snotties…

Since my Mum always said “If you can’t say anything nice…”, that is all I have to say in this thread.

Willo, I’ve had that bloody song in my head since reading this post!
I actually used to work with Alice and she’s quite a nice girl and was good at her job which is not disimilar to what it looks like she’ll be doing now. Well it’s nothing like it really but there are similar skills I imagine, organisational etc.

my dad picks the fruit… that goes to alice….to make the cordial…. that I like best…….

I’ve got some video of her singing here:

Doesn’t she make jam?

Who the hell is Alice Cottee…and is that a CIGARETTE in her right hand?! Well, she certainly looks happy. Maybe it’s a joint!

That’s a really excellent photo, arresting and rather well done. there’s some clever people around.

Since when did ‘irrepressible’ become a complimentary term?
It implies someone *should* be repressed. And that’s an odd way to describe someone.

I think that’s more about your inference, Aurelius, not the writer’s implication. (Big difference.)

I *infer* it in this instance to mean could be repressed but can’t. Dictionary explanations list examples such as ‘irrepressible laughter’ and ‘irrespressible joy’.

If someone says a gig is ‘over’, do you infer that it’s finished or that it’s hovering above something else?! Or that it’s six balls long??!!

“Since when did ‘irrepressible’ become a complimentary term?”

I think it started with the TV show “Monkey” in the ’70’s

and one of Canberra’s finest singer/songwriters and musicians.

No question of that whatsoever. I hope she finds room on the bill for herself, conflicts of interest notwithstanding.

Well, that’s fantastic news! This Fringe ’09 has got my support.
