Carers ACT will be celebrating the contribution unpaid carers make with local The Voice contestant Amber Nichols heading its Canberra Cares event.

The free event, to be held 10am-3pm Sunday October 10, launches this year’s ACT Carers Week.

Canberra Cares will feature live music, local performers, great food, family fun, handmade markets, a community information expo, and a wellbeing and chill out space. Carers come from all walks of life, all cultures and all religions. Some are only 10 years old while others are nearing 90. They may be spouses, parents, sons or daughters, siblings, friends, nieces or nephews or neighbours.

“National Carers Week is an opportunity for us to educate the community about the very important role carers play here in the ACT, as well as celebrate that contribution with a fun day out for the whole family,” CEO of Carers ACT, Dee McGrath, said.

Having recently blown away audiences as a contestant on The Voice, Canberra singer Nichols also understands the vital role carers play due to her brother requiring care as a result of a disability.

“Carers make an enormous contribution to our communities as well as our economy. Carers Week is an opportunity for all of us to take the time out to learn about caring in Australia. It’s a cause I feel very passionate about,” she said.
