Andy Friend on his sacking

The ABC has lengthy coverage and audio of sacked Brumbies coach Andy Friend and the reasons behind his shock expulsion from the club.

This quote seems particularly telling of what’s gone wrong:

“The best programs in sport are athlete-focused, coach-driven and admin-supported, and unfortunately that’s not the case at [the Brumbies].

“It became evident over the last few weeks, it’s been even probably longer that that.”

Sadly sacking the coach is a move in the wrong direction to reach that paradigm.

Fagan says that this is in the best interest of the club and the fans and that he made the decision. So does that mean that if we don’t make the finals he will resign?

I’ve been involved in team sports as a player, manager and coach for well over 35 years and I simply can’t get my head around how a coach can be sacked at the instigation of the players.

How can the club administrators can let this happen? It seems they are more interested in keeping a few marquee players happy then in making them work hard to getting the best out of them on the field. Players are there to do their best, not blame a coach when they lose, especially so early in the season.

I wasn’t a huge fan, but I’m less of a fan of destabilising the players/coaching/supporters. Which I think this does IMO.
