The thinking election nerd’s election nerd, Antony Green, has cast his expert eye over the race for the ACT Senate seats.

There’s a lot of history but it comes down to this:

For the Greens to win the second ACT seat, either Labor or the Greens have to convince Liberal voters to switch to Labor or the Greens in the Senate. On the evidence of past elections, a strategy to encourage Liberal voters to do this has yet to be devised.

to win a senat seat they really need to get close to a quota in their own right, I can’t see how they can outpoll the Libera; party.

They got a big section of the vote locally.

I’m not sure the performance since has done them any favours though.

The Greens will never win a Senate seat in the ACT – they do not have enough credibilty in the community to get a quota.

Encouraging liberal voters to vote green? Are you serious?
