This just popped into my email fron ANU vice-chancellor Ian Chubb:

As many of you will know, the ANU is approaching its 60th anniversary. The Bill establishing the Australian National University was passed by Federal Parliament on 1 August 1946.

There are many people who have helped ensure that the ANU continues to fill the special role for which it was established. Of course, there are the staff and students, past and present, and we celebrate their achievements. But in addition, there are those who support the staff and students and without whom many of us would find it more difficult to make the commitment that is required if a contemporary university is to achieve at the levels we aspire to at ANU. All of them deserve our thanks.

We therefore plan to mark the 60th birthday with an afternoon celebrating the ANU community – students, staff and their immediate families and partners – on campus on Sunday 30 July.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor University Community, at my request, is organising the celebrations. A program for the afternoon will be available closer to the time, but in the meantime I invite you to keep the afternoon of Sunday 30 July free to join the celebration.

Once the program is finalised, it will be sent to you and we will then ask whether or not you are likely to attend. We will need to get approximate numbers attending for catering purposes.

Best wishes,

Ian Chubb

And how many staff does he expect will give up their Sunday afternoon to celebrate the ANU’s 60th with him?
