Anyone know an excellent dentist in Canberra?

I am interested in hearing about any really, really good dentists in Canberra. I need some significant dental work (root canal, crown and dental implant) and I have a fear of the dentist.

I’ve tried a lady in civic but was not happy and so I hope someone out there has a great recommendation.

If you are commenting and you work with or know the dentist you are recommending personally, please say so! Thanks.

The most accomodating Dentists in the whole of Canberra I must say, my daughter was in so much of dental trauma on a Saturday and this dental clinic was the only Dentist that would offer us an emergency dental appointment. However we had to wait for an hour though, totally understandable with a waiting room full of patients and the lady Dentist Dr Sonal was so very kind, calm and well composed to deal with as my daughter was so anxious & stressed out due to her severe toothache. Dr Sonal treated her with the utmost gentle care we have ever seen.

We are switching over the whole family to Northside Family Dental having seen the best quality of dental care received here in our entire lifetime of having lived in Canberra southside and now moved to our new home in Gungahlin.

Definitely 5 stars for the best Gungahlin and Canberra emergency dentist experience. The fear of visiting a Dentist has totally vanished for my daughter after being here which is very very comforting for us as parents.

Oh, I forgot to put this awesome dental practice name and the web link, it is Northside Family Dental and their website is http://www.northsidefamilydental.com.au

I highly recommend Dr Kim Nguyen and Dr Mike Fleetwood from Civic Gentle Dental Care, my family and friends have been going there for a decade! The dentists are very professional, experienced, gentle and caring!

I would suggest if you could have a go with Dr Van Trinh at Amalgam Free Dental Care in Gungahlin, phone number 02- 6242 6666. She has extensive experience in dentistry, very gental. She just open a second dental practice and offering 15%, 10 % off. Pls see http://www.amalgam-freedentalcare.com.au

Our whole family, including 2 scaredy cats, has been going to Modern Dentistry for many years. Caring, professional, thoughtful staff.
Highly recommend.

A friend of mine suggested I see Dr Liang Liang at Oasis Dental in Kingston as she always raved about it. Liang gave her a smile make-over which was incredible. The veneers looked so natural, just perfect. I decided to make an appointment and the practice is lovely. Doesn’t feel at all like a dentist at all (and it smells nice!), everyone is super nice and being a bit scared of needles he is extremely gentle, I hardly even felt it! I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

I have been going to Graham Shaw for some years and have been happy with his service. He manages to replace fillings or put new ones in and I’ve never had anaesthetic as he doesn’t gouge ruthlessly down into nerves like others do. Seems to have that fine work control and gums don’t come away bleeding from cleans etc. Also he has done very fine work doing micro fillings in behind one of my front teeth.

I had a very nice experience with a lady called Padma at Evatt Dental. She was very gentle and quick and I didn’t feel over charged.

I recently had work done by Dr Graham Shaw at Hawker and personally i’m not happy with his work and wont ever be going back to him.

Dr Chris Hardwicke at Corinna Dental Group is fantastic. Gentle dentist and lovely person. May take quite some time to get in but it’s well worth it. Never had an issue.

I always recommend William Thompson, who’s in Manuka. I’m a total Dentaphobe, and he’s managed to get me to get regular check-ups. He’s done a number of fillings on me, and a root canal on my house-mate. I can’t speak too highly of him. He’s not that expensive either – as Dentists go.

I’m not sure if he can do the implant, but he’s definitely able to do the root canal and crown.

Good luck!

+10000, Bill Thompson is a great dentist with an awesome sense of humor… I had my root canal done by him, was about $1000 cheaper than any other dentist, and he did an amazing job, no pain during or after the procedure..

I know this post was a while ago, but I’m looking for a dentist to fix up some dodge work done elsewhere.

I also wouldn’t recommend the smile lounge. The first dentist I saw there was nice, but then she left and I had a strange dentist take my wisdom out, which likely didn’t need removing anyway, he left the door open until I asked him to shut it so his staff would stop coming in and asking him non-dental related questions and then when I asked him to look at a filling, he forgot about it because said staff members came in … again.

Colin Seaniger in Chisholm- highly recommended.

Don’t recommend Modern Dentistry. They are all smiles and professional but they are expensive and try to manipulate you into work you don’t need.

I’m bit scared of dentist but went to see a lady in Queanbeyan. I’m satisfied with the treatment and value of dollar spent. I can say quality and affordability can go side by side.

I have since seen Dr Loc Lam (recommended by someone earlier) and she was great. A number of work colleagues have also seen her and her opinions are honest and prices reasonable.

I went here the other day – they were great (despite the dental nurse excitingly telling me that this was her first day, and that she used to be a butcher). Highly recommended.

Wouldn’t want to wait for emergency dentist in public, made an appointment today for the 19th January, it’s the earliest I can get in, what a joke.

Managed to get into a dentist on the same day for an emergency treatment (a well established one in Tuggeranong) who patched up the problem pending further treatment, for which there is a two week wait. But I guess the pain over-rode the finacial impacts.

I wouldn’t go to Modern Dentistry. I had a good experience there but then had a bad one.

kjb21 I know Graham Shaw very well, he is in fact a great mate of mine. A bit confused though because when I spoke to him last he was still working as an mechanical fitter. Of course this may explain why you were told he wasn’t an orthondontist at the time, if in fact at all. I would of thought the oil stained blue overalls might of been a giveaway but I suppose you get what you pay for.

I would avoid Graham Shaw. I had orthodontic treatment with him and am now scared of dentists. He would often slip, catch my gums etc… I’ve also been told that he wasn’t an orthodontist at the time.

See Paul Gosling for the implant, he is the best and a great guy!

Pegah at Curtin Dental Care is excellent. She diagnosed things that other dentists missed and has been very thorough especially since I hadn’t seen a dentist in a few years.

Thanks everyone!

Jason Kim at Preventive Dental Care in Deakin. I had root canal work done by him a year ago, plus a few fillings, and didn’t feel a thing. Very good operator.

Ive heard a few good things about Fang in Dickson. He is ALWAYS open, even on public hols and Sundays ( although I think you pay quite a bit for his inconvenience). Apparently does a great job tooth wise.

I’ve never had any major work done, but I have been going to Jo Newton in Civic since I was a kid and she’s wonderful. She used to clean my teeth and then French-braid my hair for me afterwards!

Bill Thompson above Maccas in Manuka.
Best I’ve ever been to.

Dr James O’Brien at Campbell shops 6247 2240 is great. Been going to him for years. Haven’t had any MAJOR work done with him, but very good skills, patient care, and personality. In response to your request Ange, I don’t know him personally or work with him in any way – he’s just a good dentist.

I’m sure a lot are doing it now days, he also has “Hicaps” so if you’re privately covered you can claim through them.

Chris Kwoy or Quoi on the corner near the Ainslie Shops. Great atmosphere, state of the art equipment, and he has a great sense of humour and sets you at your ease … can’t recommend him highly enough! I have sent several friends to him and they are all happy with him too …

seconded! had a tooth removed a few weeks back -ouch – but chris was gently, communicative and personable all throughout, never didactic and didn’t lecture me (too much) about the rest of my teeth’s health. I only went to him because I had been to the same clinic with the previous dentist and needed work pronto. will be going back; which is saying much for this black duck!

I hear an echo here! Use the search engine and type in Dentist. As I have responded B4, you cant seriously expect one common reply to “an(singular)excellent dentist”, can you?

Brad Horwood (University Ave, Civic), amazing, best I have ever been to.

The dentists at Woden on Corinna St are good and they use sedation, upon request. My husband has a phobia of dentists and found the sedation to be fantastic. I’ve also had a wisdom tooth removed by them and received excellent service. The only downfall to using them is that they don’t swipe your health benefits card there and then.

Good luck!!

I’ve found Graham Shaw at Hawker (used to be at Charnwood)to be very good – and his fees tend to be on the more reasonable side than some.

I had my root canal done in Deakin by Dr Mark Taylor. I don’t remember the name of the clinic or anything though. I was referred there by the dentists at Lyneham shops. It’s funny, I thought it was supposed to be some big horrible procedure, but it wasn’t a problem at all…

Dr Fang (I know, right?) in Dickson was great. Can’t remember the name of the practice, it’s opposite Subway.

Dr Loc Lam in Lonsdale Street. I have recommended her to a few ‘scaredy cats’ and they’ve all been appreciative. Does not overcharge either in my experience. (02) 6257 3072

Alex Paragi. He was in Kingston when I went there last.
