Apartment ablaze in Narrabundah

A unit block in Narrabundah has been evacuated following a fire this morning.

ACT Fire & Rescue is on scene with five appliances at Gowrie Court in McIntyre Street where a third floor unit is well alight.

The occupant of the unit self evacuated safely. An estimated 20 more people have been evacuated from the unit block as firefighters work to extinguish the blaze.

3:45am Saturday 25 February 2012

Fireighters continue to work extinguishing the fire with the Bronto aerial appliance being used to remove roof sheeting to gain access to the fire from above the complex.

The unit has been completely destroyed with the adjoining one extensively smoke and water damaged.

ACT Ambulance Service intensive care paramedics have treated one man in his forties one scene for smoke inhalation and burns to his hands. He has been transported to The Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

The fire has now been fully extinguished.

Fire crews are now beginning salvage operations.

The cause of the fire will be investigated.

ACT Fire & Rescue have handed the building over to the property owner and departed the scene.

Half of the 12 unit building has been destroyed. The unit where the fire started because of fire and the other five due to extensive smoke and water damage.

Gowrie court eh? Guess who owns those units.

I’ll bet the resident ‘self evacuated’ when they noticed their flat was on fire. Here’s hoping they managed to grab some clean underwear on the way out!
