Arboretum water

Yesterday the Chief Minister was joined by no less than the Prime Minister and the Ambassador of Turkey to plant ~$50 worth of lone pine seedlings in the so called “International Arboretum“.

The Liberal’s Vicki Dunne has taken this opportunity to ask about the water supply for the Stanhope memorial gardens.

“Mrs Dunne said that her advice was that neither the bore on site nor water from the lake was being used.

“The idea of building the Arboretum in a drought doesn’t sit well with many in the community, I am quite sure they would be even more upset if Stanhope Labor were using potable water and not being honest with the community.”

UPDATED: Jon Stanhope’s media release is now online. The full cast of dignitaries, excluding PM and CM was:

“His Excellency Mr Murat N Ersavci, Ambassador of Turkey; His Excellency Dr John Larkindale, High Commissioner for New Zealand; Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, Chief of the Defence Force, and Major General Bill Crews, National President, Returned and Services League of Australia.”

but you’ve had your last warning about your tone – Tylers post (#1) revealed insightful information, and (#4) is merely asking questions, but its your tone that concerns me at the moment JB – and I do not consider myself alone.

Your current policy appears to be to alienate long-term posters and contributors on this site.

Traditionally, I’d have been more than happy to release exclusive information that I currently have to hand, plus a few more restaurant reviews I have done, but I’m still waiting for the promised and much-anticipated throng of lurkers-become-newbie posters and contributors who are waiting in the wings – but hey its only been 1 month so far.

Given this site has become nauseum Raiders game/Traffic/Parking/Cyclists/Stanhope – with special mention Zed/Gallagher bashing, its just sad. I sincerely hope your new corporate model works for you, cause some of us who have been with this site (and supporting the diversity of threads and contributions in it) for a long while now are being alienated because we have not changed – maybe its an old guard/changing of the guard thing, but this isnt the first event I’ve noted across a range of several long-term posters.

But point still taken, I’ll continue shutting up.

I still can’t understand that a govt strapped for cash decides to waste so much money on this sill project that will simply be burnt down in a few years.

Oh and the other thing……Don’t we have a botanical Gardens?????? Isn’t that the right place for all these rare trees.

Also JB, I was wondering where exactly you got your facts to come up with the cost of “$50 worth of lone pine seedlings”? And do you have any understanding or background as to where they have come from or the story behind them?

In the original discussion on these pines Tonka had this to say:

Seedlings which somehow come from the tree at Lone Pine have been available from the Yarralumla Nursery for some time and from memory cost about $3.

I checked this out a while ago and actually spoke to people at the nursery about it.

We’re happy to be corrected as to the value of the seedlings, but you’ve had your last warning about your tone. Discuss it with me via email if you want to object because you won’t be doing it here.

I’m looking forward to when the arboretum is finished. Surely the water spent now will be less than the excess water that has flowed with top soil off the muddy slopes over the last 7 years. Or less than the water that would be spent building and sustaining any sort of residential/commercial development.

They won’t have to water the trees forever, will they?

You’ll find that although the mob in charge of watering up at the Aboretum were not supposed to be allowed to draw water from the lake. They have to travel to get it. That did not stop the bloke in charge drawing from the lake anyway to cut-overheads,l got caught doing it and tell the inspectors that he was “testing” the viability of water usage and water quality from the lake. Not only did the inspectors NOT see straight through this bulls**t story, but gave the bloke the contract and made his the sole authority to draw water from the lake.
