Ask RiotACT

Hi Rioters.

I’m moving to Canberra for work (CBD) and recently bought a project yacht. Ideally, I’d like to find a place to put the yacht on a hardstand while I live and work on it (12 mths).

Any ideas how to find a suitable place to rent for a boy and his boat? Allhomes is not really geared towards this.

I’ve done this type of thing in boat yards before while getting ready to sail but haven’t found anything similar/suitable in Canberra. I have a car so don’t mind driving to work and would be happy with a spare patch of land/shed on a farm. If anyone has done this before (and survived the winter) or knows someone who might be willing to rent a piece of land/shed I’d really appreciate the help.

Cheers.

This is definitely a contender for Most Unique Ask RiotACT Question 2017!

LOL. Best of luck finding somewhere Mikey! 🙂

Thanks Masquara. I put an ad on gumtree with little response so I think getting around Queanbeyan and rustling some bushes is a good idea.

It might help readers give advice if you gave some specs on the size of the yacht. Is it 4 metres long or 24? I think you would be best off looking for space in an industrial area like Fyshwick, Hume or Mitchell as there are plenty of premises with lots of space. Quite possibly somewhere like Parkwood might be good too. I guess your choice of where to live will be governed by where you can find the spot to put the boat, so that you don’t have to drive far to tinker with it.
Try Gumtree in the wanted section.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll start poking around those areas and update details of the size of the yacht. It’s a 40 footer.

You could door knock around Pialligo Estate properties and the industrial parts of Queanbeyan. A premises in Queanbo might like having someone on site to keep an eye on the place.
