Ask RiotACT

Hello friendly friends!

Just wondering if anyone knows where/if it is possible to buy Port Salut cheese in the Canberra/Queanbeyan region? I do believe some Coles stores as well as Harris Farm supermarkets in Sydney stock it, however I’m yet to find any in Canberra. 🙁

Thanks in advance.

It is definitely available in Coles @ Jamison as we have purchased it several times there. It has only not been in stock when we were looking for it on one occasion.

Check with Essential Ingredients in Kingston.

If they don’t have it, possibly they can get it in for you.

Also try online. Not a smelly one? 😀

The Essential Ingredient in Kingston?

We often go to Ainslie IGA for their cheese collection. I can’t recall if they stock Port Salut though.

The Supabarn at Waniassa has a huge cheese selection

Ainslie IGA has a large selection of French cheeses. Quite likely to find it there.

Ainslie IGA has a ripping selection of cheeses. Much wider than Coles, though Coles has a good selection for one of the big supermarkets.

Coles would be your best bet across the city, and many IGA locals have unexpectedly good cheese selections too. I don’t get southside much, but there used to be specialty cheese shops at Fyshwick Markets and Manuka (cue Monty Python sketch).

At Belco markets is Deli Cravings, which normally has the edge on fromage over the other deli. If they don’t have port salut, they may have similar French washed-rind cheeses, or go over the Alps and pick up a block of Taleggio, the clown prince of soft stinky cheeses.

Or go local and try some Jensens Red. Now there is a fine Australian combat cheese.

Manuka lost its delis, but our best bakery, Silo at Kingston, has a cheeseroom and may have port salut.

The delis at Fyshwick markets are excellent. Best of them for cheese is mart delicatessen, I reckon: http://www.fyshwickfreshfoodmarkets.com.au/shops/mart-delicatessen

Have you tried the Fyshwick Markets? I have seen it somewhere but can’t remember where.
