Ask RiotACT: Whatever happened to Commonwealth Park?

Ask RiotACT

As a kid, growing up in Canberra in the 70’s and 80’s, I remember Commonwealth park as a pristine park, a place where families met on weekends for picnics, cricket on the green grass (throw a footy depending on the season), ponds galore and well manicured gardens. It was a part of Canberra that everyone could be proud of, and everyone looked after it. Last month I went wandering around with the camera. Its the ruins of what it used to be. The remnants of Florida, spray paint all over the grass where the next floriade beds will be planted. Most of the ponds absent of water. It’s a real shame. A mate of mine said the same thing a couple of years back and today was my first visit to the ponds area and I was saddened by what I saw. Is this the progression of Canberra into the “big city” stage. It’s a real shame.

Its mostly because of Floriade. The restoration process takes ages. Maybe its time they change the location of Floriade. Tbh i don’t find floriade that exciting, its mostly walking around seeing flowers ( that you could probably see all over canberra in prettier settings) and paying for overly priced food.

I would like to see more effort made to restore the park in a much shorter timeframe than seems to currently happen every year. We seem to make enough money from it, I presume it’s just penny pinching that is responsible for the fact that not much effort seems to be put into this at the moment.

Relocate Floriade to some paddock on the Hume between here and Goulburn – rent the space from some farmer. Then half of Sydney can go there for their flower photos. And anyone from Canberra too. Then we can have our park back.

If the paddock is large enough the arboretum could go there as well. They could grow their own truffles even.

It is a prime location for infill I suppose……..

Well that is the problem – Floriade gives a main event to the park, but also means it’s out of action for a good 6 months a year.
