The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Shane Rattenbury, has expressed concern that ACT Policing has announced a large scale roll out of tasers to front line police despite a motion of the Assembly calling for the release of a review into their use.
“In October last year the Assembly passed a motion requiring the Police Minister to report to the Assembly on the outcome of the ACT Policing Review into tasers.” Shane Rattenbury said.
“This morning the Chief Police Officer has revealed on radio that the police review was completed in February this year, and that police took a decision to roll out tasers six months ago.
“Given the Assembly’s motion, and how long ago the review was completed, it is extremely surprising that the Assembly first finds out the result on the front page of today’s newspaper. The Minister has failed to keep the Assembly informed in a timely manner.
But what will you do about it Shane?
[The Liberals Jeremy Hanson on the other hand is as usual racing to tell the CPO how great he thinks he is. Quite the one way bromance blossoming there.]
I hope they don’t start using tasers regularly on Thurday nights, I don’t think the mix of alcohol and electricity would be a good cocktail.
It’s hardly a “large scale roll out of tasers”. Team leaders (sergeants) only are getting them, most of whom would have a minimum of 10 years service. They are going to the most experienced police officers in the ACT, who are the ones who take control in critical incidents anyway, so it makes sense for them to have them as another use of force option.
Getting a blast from a tazer sure beats a high speed lead injection if you were having an alcohol induced psychosis.
You could almost say that the assembly was “shocked”!!!!

Yeah, I think they mentioned 15 in total when interviewed this morning….
And of course, for those of us who are perfect and do nothing wrong (well, at least don’t try to attack the cops!), it won’t be an issue anyway!

Yup. I decided a long time ago that I don’t want to be shot.
When my time comes for the alcohol induced psychosis followed by some “Clockwork Orange” style ultra violence in Civic on some future Saturday night (c’mon, we’ll all do it eventually), I would like to be tased by the responding police please.
As part of the review conducted by the AFP, was any consideration given to the use of tasercams? These devices record audio/video from the point-of-view of the taser, so will provide justification or accountability for the officers who use them.
Shane would rather they were armed with Earthsolutions Aromatherapy lavender oil sprays…

+1 (I actually laughed out loud reading this one)

I was watching a video where a US police trainer said he would “choose a bullet over a Taser anytime” (obviously he’d been shot with both)
Personally, as long as their used as self defence, not unarmed non-compliance i dont really have an issue with them.
