Aussie Junk Pty Ltd managing director Dennis Richter appeared in the Federal Magistrates Court this week and admitted to all claims put forward by The Fair Work Ombudsman including underpayments to Mitchell site staff of over $259,000.

In the witness chair Mr Richter stated that not only were officials from ACT Nowaste and Thiess Services aware of the breaches but actually instructed him to sack the employees in an attempt to make it all go away.

It is also indicated that Thiess Services failed to pay their sub-contractor Aussie Junk for performing operational services on site for over 7 years.

I suggest that a copy of the transcript would make interesting reading to both ACT Nowaste and Thiess Services. Serious allegations have been put forward under oath and people are named personally.

The pending ACT Auditor General waste management audit should be very interesting as they have indicated they will be delving into the Department’s performance against the waste management strategy, procurement and contract management issues and management of the re-use / recycling facilities.

Standing Committee at the Inquiry Into ACT Government Procurement should also take this opportunity to put forward some serious recommendations. The information they have received at the inquiry makes similar allegations as Mr Richter and outlines misconduct or at the very least serious incompetence by ACT Nowaste.
