On Friday 14 November, the Scientific Glassblowing Society of Australia New Zealand (SGSANZ) will host a public benefit auction for Toora Women Inc., a charitable organisation that provides a critical range of services for women in the Canberra region. This free event is open to the public, and includes live and silent auctions as well as a raffle.

The Toora Benefit Auction evolved from three specific ideals:

  • This is an affirmation of community engagement and the positive impact inherent in building healthy community – industry ties.
  • The global scientific glassblowing industry is extremely male represented; however, women’s issues are everyone’s issues. This is a gesture of support from the SGSANZ for our communities.
  • Scientific glassblowers directly enable scientific research and elevate humanity’s quality of life – this is one of many immediate ways that we can accomplish this.

The Toora Benefit Auction was launched in conjunction with the 11th Australasian Scientific Glassblowing Symposium, hosted in Canberra for the first time by ANU Research School of Chemistry. The symposium spans 13th – 15th November, featuring seminars and workshops at the ANU-RSC glassblowing workshop and Canberra Glassworks. Industry professionals from Australia, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Nigeria, UK, and the US contributed glassware and sculptures for the symposium and auction.

The Canberra community responded with enthusiasm and generosity to the call for support. Donations included a holiday package, gym memberships, gift vouchers, and services in kind. Individuals and businesses alike recognized the importance of supporting this cause and stood up, giving generously to promote the Toora Benefit Auction.

Support of this event not only provides much needed fiscal support to Toora Women Inc., but it also offers community support to local women and their children as they overcome the mental, physical, social, and institutional consequences of gender inequality and domestic violence.
