The heist of the century (for Canberra, at least) gone horribly wrong?
Phileas Fogg drops in on the Bucharest Hilton.
Balloon, Go home! You’re drunk.
I’m so glad that Robyn Archer has such a good sense of humour so as to allow this cryptic comment upon the quality of Treasury’s economic advice and policy development to be included in the Canberra 100 celebrations!
Here is some more hot air that has emanated from in or around Treasury:
• Mining companies only pay 18 per cent tax
• There is a statistically significant relationship between the size of a county’s stimulus package and their GDP growth during the GFC
• We will have a surplus in 2012-13
• Dr Ken Henry was not sacked
• The Strategic Review of Treasury
• And anything with the words “well-functioning markets” or “wellbeing framework” involved in it.

So that’s why they have Finance in that end of the building… defence against rogue balloons!
That’s not a balloon. That’s a South Sea Bubble.
“That’s no moon. It’s a space station.”
This is worthy of a second bite at the cherry – Bishop of Autun, with assistance from Montgolfiers, finally catches up with Keating over JWH slur – gets time (and building) slightly wrong – blames it on Time Lords (and Conroy).
How the hell does a balloon driver get ambushed by a building the size of the Treasury? It’s not like you could glance away for a second and not see it coming at you at high speed.
Surely he must’ve run out of fuel and lift or some other problem, rather than performing a controlled flight into terrain/buildng.
unexpected gust of wind would be a guess, plus he hit near the corner so might have thought he was going to deftly steer past the building.

“…deftly steer past the building”. That didn’t pan out like he expected, then.

The enemy (CT!) story mentioned the reason given was they dropped a bit to avoid a mystery balloon above, and misjudged the building clearance slightly….
One wonders how much ability these things have to steer, on my only ride in one years ago they let off a small balloon in the wee hours, it headed east so we proceeded to drive to a location in the west to launch and like the first balloon then drifted east over the city.
Surely some sort of signage would have prevented this accident.

Damn it, I was going to type that.
I’m amazed balloons are allowed, they’re not SAFE.
Most exciting thing that has ever happened to Treasury – ever.
