Containment booms have been placed across drains in Barton to prevent a serious oil spill from reaching nearby Lake Burley Griffin.
It is believed the oil spill started at a renovation site behind the National Press Club in Canberra’s south.
Emergency workers were called to the scene just before 6pm.
