This week I was hoping for a cool change so I could get all rugged up and cosy with a few cups of hot chocolate. Alas, the warm weather stuck around for another week and I found myself sipping hot chocolate in 30 degree heat.

RiotACT readers, however, were not at all concerned with the weather and got right behind this week’s topic. Votes came in for hot chocolates from all over Canberra. There were so many suggestions that I can’t name them all here, but it seems Canberra isn’t lacking in the hot chocolate department. Unsurprisingly, the most popular places were the specialty chocolate stores and, in the end, this week’s Taste Off for Canberra’s best hot chocolate came down to Koko Black and San Churro.

Koko Black in Canberra is located on Bunda Street in Civic. It is one of a chain of specialty chocolate stores that originally hails from Melbourne and now has locations all across the country. They serve up the most exquisite chocolate desserts – I, personally, cannot go past their rich and creamy chocolate mousse; it’s the best. Dark chocolate is my absolute fave, so I ordered their soy hot chocolate made with 54% dark chocolate. It was delicious, but still a bit sweet for my dark choc taste. My hot chocolate-loving partner reported the “classic Belgian” hot chocolate was pretty darn good too.

Located at Westfield Woden on Bradley Street, San Churro is another chain specialty chocolate store that has shopfronts all over Australia. Their point of difference is the strong Spanish theme, specialising in the Spanish doughnut-like sweet called “churros” and I can assure you, they are the perfect accompaniment to a hot chocolate. Keeping the hot choc contest fair, I ordered the dark couverture hot chocolate with soy milk and my partner got himself the milk couverture. They were delicious and I was particularly happy when my dark choc was the perfect mix of bitter and sweet.

San Churro

This week’s results surprised me – I am still a big fan of Koko Black, but when it comes to dark hot chocolate, San Churro has it in the bag. San Churro is the winner of the hot chocolate Taste Off.

San Churro is my go to for a chocolate fix. Delicious, great variety and always good quality. I want to go there now!!

I make a beast hot chocolate mug at home. It would cost $20 at a hipster cafe.

The classic spanish hot chocolate at San Churro is also to die for. Thick and rich – no need for dinner. 🙂

Elemental in Braddon has great hot chocolate. The big pink marshmallows are big hits with the kiddies too!
