Best of Canberra – Vegetarian

By 29 July 2014 17

aubergines-best-of

After last week’s call for Canberra’s Best steak, I did promise our vegetarian readers a go this week.

I have a friend who is a vegetarian and she used to face no end of frustration in being forced to order the ‘vegetarian option’’ on a menu which usually involved cheese, pasta or both.

If that friend visited me in Canberra, where should I take her? Where do you go for a great meat free feast?

Now excuse me while I prepare to sample the steaks…

If you want vegetarian it’s probably best to dine at a restaurant that serves cuisine from a Hindu or Buddhist origin. So Indian is quite good and Thai also works and there are plenty of good versions of both in Canberra.

Is Kingsland still around in Dickson? It’s a win-win with their “meat” flavoured dishes, haha.

it is at Au Lac.. I can’t remember what they make it out of but all the meat at Au Lac is labelled as whatever meat it’s meant to be but isn’t.

It is when it is made from soy protein and mushroom. Surprisingly it tastes like duck and has a similar texture. the also do chicken, fish etc…

Ah I see, I would have written it as “duck” in inverted commas

All these have great food with vegan options as well as vegetarian, many open for dinner.
Malaysian Chapter in Belco (street next to Good Guys)
Au Lac in Dickson, Kingsland in Dickson,
Satis in Hackett
Daytime only at lovely Sweet Bones in the arcade on hip end of Lonsdale St
A Bite to Eat at Chifley shops

Some you can call and ask – eg I know Jamie’s Italian will do vegan and vegetarian but you may need to ask in advance.

And yes – vegetarian ‘duck’ is very good, as are many other vegetarian ‘meats’

The duck itself is neither ironic nor sarcastic. I personally prefer to use a percontation point, unfortunately, my keyboard is sadly lacking in one.

That is what I never got about this place. They have dishes like “Salt and Chilli Soy Fish”, “Soy Beef in Satay Sauce” “Soy Duck” and “Sizzling Mongolian Soy Lamb”.

Obviously they know that meat tastes good, and soy tastes like crap so they have to disguise it as meat to get people to eat it.

Why pretend? Just have a lamb chop for gods sake. You know you want it!

i always found au lac far too salty – kingsland, 200m away, was always much better. good for faux food, but why bother?

As #14 asked I will give a real answer.

Buddhist vegetarian mock meat cuisine developed over a long time. The dishes served are actually based on traditional peasant food anyway, for example if you’ve worked a long day in the field and want a protein rich meal you will rinse the starch off wheat to make seitan (textured gluten) but if you then cover it with a sweet sauce it starts to taste like barbecue pork.

Monks took advantage of the dishes that offer a more meaty texture and salty umami flavour when serving the people who would come to the temple or monastery for special occasions. As it was inappropriate to eat meat on those occasions, the monks wanted to show that compassionate eating can taste the same anyway.

In a world where you can obtain meat without killing, vegetarian restaurants still serve generous dishes at fantastic prices to show that appetite is no reason to kill.

I went to Au Lac with my meat eater fiancee today and he’s now happy to eat mock duck any day I cook it for him, which is a definite win in my book.

Personally I recommend the fresh starch homemade noodle soup. :D

+1 to My Rainbow Dreams in Dickson
+1 to Sweet Bones (Braddon) &
+1 to Malaysian Chapter (Belconnen).

Though the latter are not exclusively vegetarian, their veggie menu is extensive (9 pages!), and is also mostly vegan. I ate there for the first time this week, and was very pleasantly surprised.
