Blues Piano Night

New Orleans radio station WWOZ has a long-running annual event called Blues Piano Night where many of the finest blues piano players from New Orleans and elsewhere gather for a feast of piano blues. Why should New Orleans have all the fun when we have some pretty fine piano players right here in Canberra?

So it was that a few years ago, with the great support of Bucky and the Harmonie German Club, the annual Canberra Blues Piano Night was born, held on the last Friday in November. And what a success it has been!

Four different players giving their individual takes on what blues piano means to them. And, to top it off, the four players mix and match on the two on stage pianos to play duos and trios and then that crowd favourite, the eight-handed boogie-woogie!

This time around we will have Ali Penney, well-known to Canberra audiences from her many gigs with her band, the Moneymakers. Also on the bill will be stalwarts Wayne “G-for-Jazz-but-wait-’til-you-hear-him-play-the-blues” Kelly, John “The Boss” Black and Leo Joseph, whose bands Nightless Lovers and Key Grip are amongst the best blues bands Canberra has to offer.

So, come along for yet another great night of blues in many forms from gospel to boogie on November 28 at 8 pm at the Harmonie German Club – free entry.

When: November 28
