Andrew Barr has announced that disability taxi vouchers are moving up the tech tree to a smartcard based system. And of course Cabcharge will run it:

Cabcharge has been chosen as the successful tenderer for the new ACT Taxi Subsidy Scheme Smartcard.

The new smartcard will replace the current paper-based vouchers, and will make using taxis a much quicker and simpler experience for both clients and drivers.

The smartcard system will be trialled early next month and is expected to be fully operational in July 2013.

The improvement to the Taxi Subsidy Scheme will assist vulnerable and disabled members of our community to access transportation easily and effectively, and the scheme continues to subsidise the transport costs of eligible individuals.

I hope the procedures for gaining an entitlement to the new “voucher” system are little bit tighter than they were in my taxi driving days.

It seemed that anyone in the know could get them. Some just wanted to convert their vouchers into cash, others want to pay he whole trip with them (rather than 50%).

The only people who seemed to use them properly were the truly handicapped.

Nothing new I suppose.
