The ateam4canberra bid committee has offered 5000 people a chance to show their support and become foundation members for $200 each. This sort of financial commitment from the fans for an A-League team bid for Canberra would definitely send a strong message to the FFA.

A foundation members trust account has been set up with Service One Members Banking a and membership will be taken at all branches starting 17 July 2008. The membership monies will be held in trust pending the successful bid process.

The Canberra Times will be taking a photo of all foundation members who sign up at Service One Members Banking (Bailey’s Corner, Canberra City) on Thursday 17 July @ 9am. [ED – wot? Other media not invited?]

It’s time for supporters of the world game to put their money where their mouth is!!!

A month in an foundation memberships is currently at 497* … looks like it is going to be tough to crack 5000 in the short term. 🙁

*According to the list here: http://a-league4canberra.com.au/currentMembers.cfm

They need to take this online and fast. I finally got down to the Service One at Tuggers to pay my $200 and there was nothing in branch to indicate they had any involvement in this scheme. An enquiry at the counter finally produced a result but only after 10 minutes of staff conferring, shuffling through books and paperwork, scratching of heads and many a puzzled look at their computer screens. Take it on line guys.

Good to hear there was a great turn out. Couldn’t get there myself today unfortunately. How many people were there? At least 55 from what George said.

Indeed, the hard work now begins!

Went along this morning. I am Foundation member 55.

It was not a bad crowd for a freezing work-day morning.

John McKay from ACTEW, Neale Guthrie from Canberra Stadium, Senator Lundy, Gary Kent (Candidate for Molonglo) were all there signing up. Many other professionals and members of local clubs were also in line.

Bid Leader, Ivan Slavich was there to personally meet and greet everyone.

Now the hard work begins.

Hmmmm, I may turn up…I work around the corner!

Sounds like a good idea, no way you can lose your money and if it helps bring A League Soccer to Canberra I’m all for it. Let’s just have a club for all Canberra and for Australians and not just for immigrants from small European backwaters.

Ah ha! The Chuck Norris Club. Do we have to buy our own red beards or are they provided to people who put up the $200?
