Canberra ABC Centres Saved from the Chop.

The ABC is reporting that the beancounters putting the squeeze on Eddie Groves’ testes and his company ABC Learning, will keep the ACT centres in Russell and Aranda operating.

The Queanbo centre is still keeping its head above the water with the usual cash injection from the Government for vital services in a marginal seat.

Good news for all parents I say.

All of this still begs the questions is there a place in the child care industry for big business? I mean, perhaps one day long long ago Mr Eddie Groves had good intentions of setting up a chain of child care centres to actully ‘support the development of children’ but I’m afraid that all went out the door when he tried to run a multi million dollar business out of it. Childcare is just that, not a listing on the ASX.

Sorry. I guess that should read “ABC announced yesterday afternoon…”, but it was current at the time of posting.

ABC have announced this afternoon that these ABC Childcare Centres in the ACT will remain open in 2009.
I guess this news will come as a relief to any parents with kids in those few centres in this list that were originally a chance to close.

KIngston has always been viable and not one of the centres that faced closing. No changes and I was able to re-enroll my kidlet for next year.

The Canberra Times is painting an even darker picture.

“…the Queanbeyan North centre, on Hutchison Circuit, along with those in Goulburn, Cooma and Surfside, are among those deemed ”unviable” without government help.
The Government will also run the centre at Russell, and another 20 centres at Defence establishments… Mr Honey also revealed 64 centres whose profitability was uncertain, including those at Aranda and Jerrabomberra, were now regarded as viable, as were the rest of the ACT’s centres.”

Full ACT Map with both Queanbo and Issacs centres etc on the view.

Interesting… It seems that ABC (the government media wonks) and ABC Learning (the pre-school operator) seem to have a couple of different stories on this one.

Here is a map of all the ABC Learning Centres in Central Canberra-ish, and it appears that Jerra is continuing and Russell is open via Defence funding. Kingston and Turner it seems are good to go. However I am sure that food studies might be little dicey at Kingston.

What about the one in Kingston
