Canberra electricity is very cheap

Hey

Living in NSW, under 20 klicks from the northern border of ACT. The cost of electricity per kilowatt/hour is so much more than Canberra (ACTEW AGL) across all tariffs, despite our home being a mere 15 min drive from Bonner shops.

Is Canberra’s residential electricity subsidised?

Anyone know of good energy price deals for nearby NSW locales?

We are just as far from the powerstations as anyone in Canberra….federalism is an ass !

You can use the switchwise website to find cheap power suppliers in your area. Ive found Dodo to be one of the cheapest electricity suppliers, however you might find being regional that solar might be worth investing in, as well as looking at grid power.

Thanks dvaey, will check that out !

Thanks Sean. Makes sense. Have a cousin in Amaroo – just need a 20km extension cord I guess !

The ACT and NSW will be paying the same wholesale energy costs, but the difference will all lie in all the margins added on between the generators selling into the grid and us getting the power at the other end.

NSW users have had fairly big increases in the last few years driven by investment in transmission and distribution infrastructure. All that investment needs to be paid for somewhere, so I suppose it ends up in the margins NSW retailers pay to NSW distribution and transmission entities and therefore distributed across everyone’s bills.

A lot of those costs, the ACT won’t be paying, because ActewAGL should theoretically be paying ACT infrastructure costs, not NSW ones. In addition, ActewAGL is both distributor and retailer and may have lower margins for that reason (though I’m not sure about that).
