Canberra Intl Airport - Traffic Stoppers ?

SO, from my Vantage Point this morning, I noticed a great big monstrosity of a blue plane heading down the runway towards the far end, to take off.

It was a blue Korean Air Lines plane.
Then, I further noticed, the road along the back of the runway, had been blocked off. Cars were not being permitted to travel either direction, along the back of the runway.

This BFF kicked up one hell of a dust storm, but it makes me wonder… what sort of International Airport needs to stop traffic every time a large airplane takes off or lands ?

(sorry, no pictures)

Concorde did indeed – I saw it. From the playground of the brand new Scullin Primary School. It was only a long skinny dot in the sky, but hey I can say I saw Concorde!

I’m pretty sure at one time the Concorde flew in to Canberra.

Canberra is an International airport: it just doesn’t have any permanent Customs facilities or any International flights at the moment!

Last year, Air Pacific were flying Canberra-Nadi and vv twice weekly, but I don’t think it was very successful.

When are they going to open up the trans-Tasman direct from Canberra?????

Korean President… do you people not see all the Korean flags flying all over the place? When they fly another country’s flag it usually means an important person is visiting for that country

Its an international aiport because we have a direct flight to Auckland and Christchurch for Brumbies grand finals

They did it for Bush, Clinton and Bush II.

Yea, i know it was the Korean president, but I just don’t recall them blocking off the road like that for the US president….
(that, and I enjoy bagging out the airport…)

Canberra has been servicing international flights, on and off, for about the last decade.

You might want to check some more

They stoppedf traffic coming from the shouth on all the roundabouts from Kings Ave to the airport. Myself and a collegue were on a flight that left at 9:15, coming from the west along Parks Way I was ok, but he got delayed and almost missed the flight when they blocked traffic coming from the south doing anything but left hand turns at the roundabouts. They started blocking as I was going along at 08:40.

apparently there are plans for a pop-up blast wall to go in at the southern end of the runway.
on my trip to work this morn, i saw raaf dudes at russell offices lining up for a bit of a parade and then a cop car sitting at the dairy road runabout looking poised for traffic control. about 8:20am. thought something was on.

last time i checked Canberra did not have any interntaional flights. Why is it called an international airport them, other than to make brand depot appear classier?

It was the Korean President according to the papers and I assume that in time they’ll build a blast fence at the bottom of the runway – take a look if you ever drive past the runway at Sydney – they have a huge mother of a barrier protecting the traffic from jet blast

Think about it…….maybe a visiting Korean dignitary?

Last I checked Korean Air didn’t have scheduled flights into Canberra
