Former Canberra boy Dr Michael Brand has just been appointed director of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California, one of the world’s most important museums, the Canberra Times tells us.

Dr Brand was born in Canberra, studied at ANU and worked at the National Gallery. His career has also seen him working at the Queensland Art Gallery and as director at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Former NGA boss Betty Churcher said she thinks he’s up to the job and his parents said they think it’s a magnificent thing.

“Imagine”, his mother said, “from Queensland to Richmond and now to Los Angeles – you never know what will happen.”

Unfortunately greater Australia follows the theme: If it’s arty-farty then the Europeans do it best.

I’m not saying I agree with it, but our institutions and soccer squads have been run like that for years.

I wish Austraslia would realise we can hire our own people for top jobs in this country. Nearly all our National Institutions are run by Europeans. And not all of them well.
