Canberra most haunted?

By 23 December, 2008 281

[First filed: July 14, 2008]

Blogger Kristine has been digging around Canberra’s ghost stories and has decided Canberra is the most haunted place in Australia.

perhaps the most fiendish of all Canberra’s ghosts, though, comes from the National Film and Sound Archive, which is built on the site of the former National Institute of Anatomy. It has been reported that many people who visit the basement area, have been pinned up against the wall by an unknown force!!

Most haunted? Or most populated by people who want to believe?

UPDATED: Reader Queanbeyan posted the following:

Information for all who dare to attend the so called haunted house in Michalego. This is NSW Police, by entering this private property you are breaking the law. If caught you will be charged, it is an offence to tresspass on private property. NSW police will be conducting regular patrols of the above and surrounding areas. You have been warned !!!!!

His email makes it look legit.

UPDATED AGAIN: More cool Canberra ghost stories have been posted recently!

Ok guys here is some real history for you about the “Michelago haunted house”…

THE HIBERNIAN HOTEL
This two-storey stone building is on the right-hand side of the
highway going north from the village turn-off. It dates from 1872,
and replaces the earlier hotel of the same name established in
1856 by Thomas Kennedy and his wife Mary (nee Maher). Both
buildings also served as Coach Offices, offering accommodation
and stabling for travellers to and from the Monaro. After the
death of 55-year old Mr. Kennedy in March 1875, Mary retained
ownership until her death June 1894, aged 82.

In June 1866 the notorious bushrangers, the Clarke brothers,
and some others of the ‘Jingera Mob’, made a second assault
on the village in only a matter of months. Instead of the PostOffice Store, their attention this visit was focused on the old
Hibernian, where they held captive many of the locals, while
they ransacked Abraham Levy’s store across the road. The day
was rounded off by ‘drinking the hotel dry’ (or almost) and
forcing their captives to do the same, before staggering off to
their hideouts in the Jingera range east of the town. Those left at
the Inn were in no fit state to give chase. The family of the local
police officer, Constable Moran, were amongst those detained,
‘the law himself’ riding escort with the gold-carrying coach, en
route from the Kiandra diggings to Queanbeyan.

The absence of a School of Arts or Hall in the village meant the
Hibernian served as the local hub, hosting concerts, balls,
fundraising activities for the church, sports days, auction sales
and the best place to celebrate winnings (or drowning sorrows)
after the local horse races

After the death of Thomas & Mary there were different licensees
until the sale to local property owner, Mr. W. Lenane in March
1895, and another change of ownership in 1900, to George
Fane De Salis (late of ‘Cuppacumbalong’) .The name of the
property changed to ‘Soglio’ and the old inn became the family
home, occupied in the latter years by the four Misses De Salis,
until 1962. ‘Soglio’ continues in family ownership and a working
property

Hobart, Hobart Gaol, my only ‘experience’ in 58 years. In 2000, on our first trip to Tassie, I was the last in line on the tour. 1/2′ish way through the tour the guide brought us to a room, all entered and as I stepped onto the stone step I got a overpowering sensation not to enter, and stepped back off the step. I noticed my hair on the back of my head did a adrenaline rush ‘stand up”. The guide on learning from me my reason informed us that it was used for executions. We hadn’t been told this beforehand.
My father, whilst a primary teacher at Coolah, had his one and only ‘experience’. He took the shortcut through the bush along ‘the creek’ after he finished footy training one night. He was spooked big-time, and sprinted. As he ran through the front gate of the boarding house fence, the ‘fearless’ house dog nearly knocked him over running past him and disappeared into the bush along the track my father had just left. The dog returned, seconds later, tail between his legs, ran under the house and apparently would not come out for 6 days, even to eat!
I have a very open mind on such things despite only one perceived experience, Mark

I was abducted by space aliens and anally probed, but it wasn’t as much fun as it sounds.

Gotta go – I’m off to my iridologist to have my feng shui aligned.

Has anyone noticed how this thread re-appears every six months or so, to rattle it chains? It’s uncanny.

Getting drunk and finding your way to Fyshwick public toilets isn’t alien abduction dude :P

Sent the final photos plus the artwork for the cover (control freak so I designed and drew my own cover) to the publisher recently.

And yes, I can’t quite believe how long it’s all taking.

I’ll let JB know when it is available. In fact, I’ll probably send RA a complimentary copy.

In the meanwhile I’m just finishing off a 100K word manuscript on folklore, paranormal mysteries and other generally stange stuff. Sort of Fortean I guess. We’ll see what happens with that.

Cheers :)
