…As if we needed a reason to be next to the lake at 7am, on an unseasonably pleasant (if you were wearing Damart gloves or your Granddad’s cardigan) Saturday morning.

We assembled to take part in a global Google+ 1st anniversary photowalk. The global nature of the event seems to have fizzled out before the sun rose on the city of Perth, but nonetheless, we shot some nice photos around the lake and National Gallery.

It’s app and games ecosystem is non-existant.

That sounds like a good thing – I may have to give it a try after all.

I thought Google+ had shut down.

Nope. In fact it is really starting to hit its straps now. Much nicer to use than Facebook. Their Circles concept stomps all over the Facebook privacy concerns and allows you a lot of flexibility to tune your newsfeed to suit yourself.

The online video Hangouts are proving a game changer and very popular for interesting uses like virtual star parties (for those interested in astronomy, search on Cosmoquest) and many other topics. Julia Gillard is having one in a couple of weeks even.

They’ve just added an Events function which works really well with Google Calendars. Their iPhone app is gorgeous to use (versus the Facebook app being bloody frustrating).

It’s my long-form social media platform of choice.

Its privacy controls are vastly inferior to Facebook or Twitter. (Those who think it’s better don’t know how it really works).

It’s app and games ecosystem is non-existant.

Worst though is once people try it for a while, they leave.

It was a brilliant way to spend an early morning. Big thanks to Martin for corralling us and taking us to some corners of the Triangle I haven’t stumbled on before. Miss 7yo enjoyed herself too.

Now need time to sort through the chaff for the wheat…
