CHOICE’s annual Shonky Awards are an opportunity for the people’s watchdog to hand out lemons to manufacturers, service providers, marketers, advertisers, and government agencies that fail to deliver on their promises.

Since 2006, regular award winners include banks, telcos, and food advertisers.

See the washer/dryer that flaunted its green credentials, but used more water to dry a load of washing than to wash it. Hear the howls of protest when Choice suggested that Apple’s process for dealing with iPod warranty claims was less than best practice. And laugh all over again as we recall the Power Balance wrist band saga – holograms anyone ?

Scott O’Keefe is a Test Co-ordinator for Digital Home at Choice. Digital Home encompasses home entertainment – primarily TVs, but also test digital radios, home theatre components and package systems, Blu-ray players, cordless phones, etc. He is also involved in some tests outside of the Digital Home area, e.g. car navigation (GPS), air conditioners, mobile phones.

Scott been working at CHOICE since 2004. Pre-CHOICE he was in the IT industry (doing software development / team leadership) 20+ years. He was with Insurance Australia Group (NRMA Insurance) for 17 years. Scott is into retro-tech – think AC synchronous clocks and nixie tubes, and is a member of Australian Skeptics.

Dinner will follow the debate at the Canberra Club, 45 West Row Canberra City. To RSVP for dinner please email: mail@canberraskeptics.org.au
