Local singer-song writers of all levels of experience can take advantage of the Canberra Songwriters Workshops that happen on the last Monday of each month.

Original work is shared and explored. Feedback is given. It sounds like a very useful thing, and it;s about to become more useful now that it’s gotten a big cash boost.

The workshop has built a strong following of talented local songwriters since the launch of a Canberra-based pilot program in April this year. The success of the pilot has convinced the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) to provide $2000 in funding through the APRA Music Grants 2013-2014 Skills Development program.

Facilitator and local musician Stephen Price explains the workshop concept:

“The Canberra Songwriters Workshop is based on a proven format operating successfully in Sydney and the United States. We meet once a month to encourage songwriters to create new and original material, present your song to the group and receive valuable feedback.”

“The floor is open for everyone to participate. You don’t even need to bring a song – you can simply come along and have your say in providing feedback to other artists. You’ll listen to brand new songs, meet new people and discover what it takes to be a great songwriter.”

“New songwriters can learn from established artists about composition, phrasing and creative writing. If you are already an experienced songwriter, you’ll find the monthly targets to prepare a song for critique are a great antidote to procrastination. You’ll be motivated and inspired to build up a repertoire for your next album with proven and tested new material.”

“This is a great opportunity for songwriters to take it to the next stage – live performances of original Australian local content that the whole community can benefit from. We are really excited that, with APRA’s support, we have been able to secure a larger capacity venue for our increasing popularity and where we can promote guest speakers throughout the year.”

The next workshop is at the Statesman Hotel, Curtin on Monday 30 September, starting at 6.30pm. Your first session is free and you are welcome to bring along a friend. Register your interest now at: http://www.canberrasongwriters.com
